English Language Assessment (ELAP)

Any international student who does not have a waiver and who scores less than 100 on the internet based TOEFL (Paper TOEFL-600, IELTS-7) must participate in the English Language Assessment Program (ELAP). Registration for this assessment takes place during Orientation. Outcome of the assessment may determine placement in one or more ESL courses during the first semester of enrollment.

Testing

Entering students may be required to take placement exams to determine the level of college coursework they will enroll in for their first semester. In addition, students who have not yet met Texas Success Initiative requirements, as outlined by the State of Texas, may also be required to take additional exams before registering for classes.

Housing

Living on campus can be an important part of the college experience. With several different on-campus housing options, students can find the best environment for them. Application for Spring semester housing is available during the fall semester. Students admitted for summer and fall terms can begin the applying for housing in mid-January.

Academic Advising

Admitted transfer students are able to schedule a meeting with their academic advisor once they have been admitted. Freshmen and freshmen transfer students will attend academic advising sessions during their scheduled orientation.

Texas residency requirements for tuition purposes

International students are expected to pay out-of-state tuition; however, the Texas Higher Education Coordinator Board has outlined some rules whereby an international student may qualify as a Texas resident for tuition purposes to pay the in-state tuition rate.  Please visit http://www.collegeforalltexans.com/ for more information.  Residency forms can be submitted to The Office of The Registrar, UTSA, One UTSA Circle, San Antonio TX 78249.

Final Document Submission

All students with courses in progress are required to submit final transcripts prior to their enrollment. Admitted freshmen are required to submit their final high school transcript reflecting their graduation date or completion of high school that has been determined equivalent to a U.S. high school graduation, as applicable.  Admitted transfers must submit final transcripts for any work in progress.

Student Health Services

Health Insurance:
The University of Texas Board of Regents requires all international students holding non-immigrant visa status and residing in the United States to maintain approved comprehensive health insurance coverage while enrolled in the The University of Texas at San Antonio.

International students will be automatically enrolled in the UT System student health insurance plan at the time of registration, unless evidence of approved comparable coverage has been furnished to the International Program Office at 458-7202, Main Building (MB 1.210), and a waiver obtained. The charge for this coverage appears as a required fee on the student’s bill.

Waivers will not be issued after the census day. The Office of International Programs, International Student Services completes waivers.

TB Screening:
International students are required by UTSA to have a tuberculosis (TB) skin test or chest x-ray performed and read within 90 days prior to registration. The results must be read by a physician or nurse licensed to practice in the United States of America (USA). The TB test may be obtained from the Student Health Services clinic (RWC 1.500) for a charge and must be completed prior to registering for classes. Students who do not complete this test will not be allowed to register for classes. A student with positive results must have proof of appropriate follow-up and treatment and a confirmatory report submitted to Student Health Services.

Immunization Requirements:
All new students must be immunized for Meningococcal Meningitis. This requirement applies to all students who were born after January 17, 1982.

This is a Texas state law. This vaccination requirement began in May 2011. New students will not be allowed to register for classes until they have had the immunization.

Students must submit the Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccine Requirement form and all required documents to UTSA Student Health Services. To learn more, visit the UTSA Student Health Services website.

Note: This requirement must be completed at least 10 days before the semester start date. The spring semester begins on January 13, 2013. Students must submit required documents to UTSA Student Health Services by January 3, 2013.
