Demography and Organization Studies

The Department of Demography and Organization Studies was established and the Ph.D. in Applied Demography was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in January of 2006.  The first class of students enrolled in the Fall Semester 2006 and lists a current enrollment of about 20 students. The Department will admit at most 15 students each year for the next six years and then maintain its enrollment as students begin their fourth and fifth years of study.

The Departmental Office and faculty offices are located on the second floor of the University’s Main Building.  The Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research (IDSER), is located on the 4th floor of the Business Building at UTSA’s 1604 campus.

Directed by Dr. Karl Eschbach and operating in collaboration with the Department of Demography and Organizational Studies, The Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research is the largest applied demographic research institute in Texas.   IDSER faculty and staff conduct ongoing analyses of the impacts of demographic change on Texas and other parts of the nation including its landmark work: The New Texas Challenge: Population Change and the Future of Texas by Steve Murdock, the founding Director of the Institute and Presidential nominee as the next Director of the US Census Bureau. The Institute employs several full-time Demography Ph.D. students on research projects while the Department, through the College of Public Policy, supports as many as 8 full time students.

Our Academic Mission:

The Department of Demography and Organization Studies provides research, education and public service programs intended to increase the base of knowledge and understanding regarding the size, distribution, composition, of human populations and how they organize. This includes the provision of an understanding of the conceptual bases of population and organizational strategy structure, policy, and methods for analyzing such factors.  The focus of the Ph.D. program is on the application of demographic analysis and organizational analyses to policy issues encountered in the public and private sectors with an emphasis on health care and policy.

The Department is also the coordinating entity for a student internship program with the U.S. Bureau of the Census that allows selected students to receive paid internships with the U.S. Bureau of the Census in Washington, D.C. Information about this unique opportunity is available with Dr. Don Warren at (210) 458-6353.

Ph.D. in Applied Demography:

The Department’s Ph.D. in Applied Demography includes two tracts: One provides training in Demography with special emphasis on the interrelationships between demography and health, and a second tract examines the effects of demographic factors on public policy issues. The program is designed to provide opportunities for both full-time (9 hours or more) and part-time (6 hours) per fall and spring semesters and 3 or more hours matriculation in the summer.  Both tracts are designed to produce graduates who can work either in academia or in applied settings related to health and public policy.

The University of Texas School of Public Health at San Antonio and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio collaborate by offering instruction and research courses in the Ph.D. program and work experiences to our students.

Entities in IDSER:

Located in the Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research is the Texas State Data Center which supplies, distributes and analyzes demographic data for over 50,000 Texans and others each year, providing extensive access to demographic and other databases on its website.  It also completes annual population estimates and biennial projections which are used for facility, personnel, and budgetary planning by state agencies and others in the State of Texas.
Dr. Karl Eschbach serves as a chief governmental expert and advisor to the state in regard to demographic issues. The Texas State Data Center serves as the San Antonio Office of the State Demographer.  Please contact Beverly Pecotte, (210) 458-6543, for more information.
