The Institute of Texan Cultures, one of three campuses of The University of Texas at San Antonio, is a museum dedicated to enhancing the understanding of cultural history, science and technology and their influence upon the people of Texas.

ITC opened in 1968 as the Texas Pavilion, part of the original HemisFair site in downtown San Antonio. It was authorized by the legislature to remain open, with a mission to serve as the state's center for multicultural education.

Special Features

Institute of Texan Cultures from various angles

  • ITC welcomes more than 300,000 visitors annually to view its 50,000 square feet of exhibits about the 27 ethnic and cultural groups who settled Texas.
  • Traveling exhibits about Texas history and culture, publications, audiovisuals, Internet-based technology, statewide radio program, multicultural resource products and teacher training programs and workshops play an important part in the ITC mission to enhance learning in the schools.
  • In addition to school tours, the ITC provides quality training to preservice teachers in the College of Education and Human Development, and delivers customized educational content to K-12 classrooms nationwide through outreach and video conferencing programs.
  • ITC library contains resource materials focusing on ethnic and cultural history, including 6,000 volumes and a historical photograph collection of more than 3,000,000 images. The UTSA Archives is also housed at the institute, and the institute's retail store offers a broad selection of publications, international gift items and Texas products.
  • ITC sponsors a variety of enriching experiences for visitors of all ages: engaging exhibits, multicultural family programs, and colorful events, including the Texas Folklife Festival, celebrated during the second weekend in June.
