Thank you for your interest in The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). We have much to offer an international student such as yourself. San Antonio is an international city providing opportunities for a variety of multicultural experiences. It is also the premier destination spot for thousands of tourists each year.  UTSA is an educational component of the world renowned University of Texas System and was established on June 5, 1969.

Student enrollment for undergraduate and graduate students is approximately 27,200. You will find important information on this page about our admissions requirements and procedures for having foreign credentials evaluated. Please read this information carefully. All official documents must be submitted to the Office of Admissions before the application deadline. Official sealed documents signed by the appropriate school official are necessary to assist in our determination of admission eligibility.

Applicants must prove proficiency in the English Language by taking either the IELTS or TOEFL examinations. English as a Second Language courses will be required for those students who need additional language training.

*The UTSA English Language Assessment Program is required of all new students. Students are assigned to take from none to three English Second Language classes if it is judged the courses will benefit the student.

**Students are admitted to Intensive English with a guarantee that they are accepted to the Bachelor’s Degree Program of their choice as soon as the appropriate level of English proficiency has been achieved. Conditional Admission is not available to graduate students. The I-20 issued by the university covers both programs.

IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia. For more information - click here.

International undergraduate students must:

  1. Hold a secondary diploma equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma. Refer to the Undergraduate Catalog (2006-2008) to determine documents required for your classification. Transcripts and/or certificates must bear the appropriate signatures, stamps and/or seals. Photostat copies of signatures, stamps and/or seals will not be accepted. Applications will not be processed based on unofficial documents (Photostat or fax copies). An official English translation must accompany all documents.

  2. Have superior grades.

  3. Submit completed application for admission three months before the desired term of enrollment to the Office of Admissions along with a $40.00 non-refundable application fee (US dollars). Checks or money orders are acceptable, but must be drawn on a US or US affiliated bank. Do not mail cash.

  5. Submit official transcripts from each high school, college or university attended with English translations attached.

  6. Transfer Students with US college credit!  Check out the Transfer Course Equivalency Chart for information on transferability of your course work taken at US colleges or universities.

  7. First year students (Freshmen) who have not earned any university level credit should send their high school transcripts, with English language translation attached, if not printed in English, to the Office of Admissions. No transcript evaluation report will be required. First year students (Freshmen) who have earned some university level credit should follow the directions for Transfer students.

    Transfer Students with foreign university credit should submit a transcript evaluation report from the Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA), or other university approved evaluation service. Official transcripts, certificates, and diplomas from foreign (non-US) high schools, universities, and university level schools plus the English language translations and the $75.00 evaluation fee (US dollars) should be mailed directly to the FCSA along with the completed FCSA form. The evaluation service will mail you a detailed evaluation and will mail the Office of Admissions at UTSA a copy as well. They will also forward your official transcripts to our office at your request.

  8. Submit TOEFL score report with a minimum of 61 (internet based test), 173 (computer generated examination) or 500 (paper examination), or IELTS with a minimum score of 5.

    Applicants whose TOEFL scores fall between 32 and 61 on the internet TOEFL, or between 97 and 173 on the computer generated examination, or between 400 and 500 on the paper version, or a 3.5 on IELTS and who meet all academic criteria for admission, will be offered admission to the Intensive English Program with a guarantee that they will be accepted to the degree program of their choice as soon as they have achieved the appropriate level of English proficiency. The I-20 issued by the university will cover both the Intensive English Program and the Bachelor's Degree Program. A separate application is not required.

  9. Submit results of other tests taken, example: SAT or ACT (The SAT is required for students who have graduated from an 11 year high school, who plan to participate in intercollegiate athletics, or who will be applying for the University Honors Program). Request that appropriate test scores (IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, ACT, etc.) be mailed directly to UTSA from the testing company.

  10. Submit a completed Confirmation of Financial Resources Form with bank statement(s) attached. Your Confirmation of Financial Resources does not determine your acceptance, however, it must be on file before an admission decision can be made and an I-20 can be issued or a transfer of schools can be accomplished. Your bank statement must be an original computerized financial record of your account and it must have the signature of the appropriate bank official or the original stamp of the bank. If it is not in English, a translation must be attached. For your convenience in providing this financial information, The University of Texas at San Antonio has designed a form for you or your parents (sponsors) to complete and attach to the financial statement.

  11. We suggest that students who are transferring credit from universities outside the United States bring with them to UTSA their prior university catalog, prospectus, course syllabi, or other material containing a brief description of the course contents. If this is in a language other than English, we suggest that students make a translation. Should none of the aforementioned items be available, please bring a list of textbooks and their authors. This will be very helpful to academic advisors.

    Students attending other schools in the United States of America (Intensive English Institutes, High Schools, Colleges, or Universities) that wish to transfer or apply to the University of Texas at San Antonio will be expected to provide an Immigration Transfer Form signed by your International Student Advisor or other school official responsible for USCIS paperwork after you have been accepted to UTSA.

  12. If you are an international student or exchange visitor entering the U.S. to attend school for the first time, and your I-20 or DS 2019 is issued after September 1, 2004, you will be required to pay a SEVIS fee before applying for your U.S. visa. This fee is $100 and it must be paid at least three business days before reporting to the U.S. consulate to submit a visa application. For current information on the SEVIS fee, please see the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement SEVP web site, www.ice.gov/sevis.
