Studio Culture

Research Areas and Centers

In both the architecture and interior design programs, priority is given to a learning environment conducive to the student’s education and to the initiation of a life-long process of learning. The goal of the department is to make an environment where students learn to take responsibility for their own education within a holistic framework and with the guidance of faculty. The faculty is primarily responsible for establishing the necessary environment for the student’s educational growth, and for opening the intellectual horizons that challenge the student to continually expand and deepen their critical understanding of the discipline of architecture.

Studio culture is informed by the following principles:

  1. a critical dialogue between faculty and students
  2. an on-going investigation within the student’s work
  3. the design studio works as a community
  4. the design studio is a confluence of disciplines and coursework
  5. collaboration and integration are both encouraged and incorporated
  6. the studio is an engine for informing the students’ developing values and judgments
  7. lectures and presentations inform the studio work
  8. students are encouraged to establish their own trajectory of investigation
  9. appropriate time is scheduled for student work
