About UIP:

  1. What is the University Internship Program

The UTSA Internship Program will provide students with experiential learning opportunities on campus which are part of UTSA’s Graduate Retention and Improvement Plan. This program will enable students to gain practical career experience, earn money while they learn, strengthen their relationships with university faculty and staff, and enhance their university experience

  1. What is an Internship

According to NACE, National Associations of Colleges and Employers, an internship is defined as a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom, enables the student to gain practical experience as a professional under conditions conducive to educational development, an internship introduces the student the transition from college to work and a well structured internship program should help facilitate that transition. Furthermore, the internship experience should allow the student to network in professional fields they are considering for career paths, allow an opportunity for personal professional development, and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.

However, there are no guidelines by which employers, educators, and students can consistently define ″internships″. To establish uniformity in the use and application of the term ′internships,′ the UTSA Career Center in conjunction with NACE will use the previous definition.

  • Work study Vs. Internship

    • It is vital for University departments to differentiate between work-study and an internship when creating a position. Work studies, although important because of the transferable skills they allow the student to acquire, are done primarily for the student’s monetary gain and to fill a position within a department. Internships are undertaken for the student to develop a better understanding of his/her academic major or field of interest by contributing to an organization through meaningful work and career related tasks. These tasks should encourage and allow the student to learn professionalism and obtain skills he/she does not yet possess. Some of the main differences between a work-study position and an internship include: (side by side comparison).

  1. Eligibility for the UIP


    The following are minimal requirements for one to be considered for University Internship Program:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree for the first times
  • Opportunities for faculty and staff to mentor students in and out-of- the classroom
  • Enrolled 15 credit hours or more, each Fall and Spring semesters
  • A minimum Cumulative 3.0 GPA and Semester GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Meet SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) requirements (?????)
  • High School Graduate or GED
  • A minimum of 12 credit hours completed in residence as a full-time student at UTSA
  • A minimum of 30 credit hours completed for transfer students
  • A maximum of 90 credit hours completed for first time applicants
  • Preference will be given to students whose first semester at UTB was two years prior SEI application or later.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen, Resident, F-1 Visa International Student or DACA card

  1. Students will work in a job related to his/her major field of study (maximum of 20hr/wk during the Fall and Spring Semesters) Students will receive a wage of $9/hr, the University Internship Program will cover 75% of the salary ($6.75/hr) and the assigned department will cover the remaining 25% ($2.25/hr).
