Facilities
in the Microanalytical Chemistry Lab
Offices and lab space
Dr Garcia's office is located in the first floor of BSE (BSE 1.104B) and occupies an area of about 100 sq. feet. The PI's laboratory occupies 1000 sp. ft. in the top floor of the new BSE Building (BSE 4.208). The PI also occupies one office in the same building (BSE 4.204) with an area of 150 sq. feet that is completely dedicated to students.
Instrumentation in the lab
All the instrumentation in the lab was purchased after 2005 and is fully operational.
- Spectroscopic ellipsometer (Woollam)
- Capillary Electrophoresis (PACE/MDQ Beckman Coulter) with UV detection
- High voltage power supply (for microchip applications)(2)
- CHI812 potentiostat with PC and software
- Inspection microscope with digital camera and software
- pHmeter (Orion)
- Analytical balance (Metler-Toledo)
- 2 6-feet hoods & 2 4-feet hoods
- General laboratory instrumentation (pipettes, ovens, UV-Vis spec, etc)
- 4
additional computers (with Internet connection) are also available for data analysis
Microfabrication / Cleanroom
A new room (BSE 2.105) will be exclusively dedicated to the fabrication of microchips. The room is about 100 SqFt ad it is equipped with furniture and instrumentation. (low UV lights, , HEPA filters, hot plates, , plasma cleaner, WS-400B-6NPP-Lite Spin Processor)
- Laminar flow hoods (Class II) (2)
- Digital hot plates (VWR)
- Light Source (OAI)
- Plasma cleaner/oxidizer
- WS-400B-6NPP-Lite Spin Processor (Laurel Technologies)
- Profilometer (Sloan Dektak IIA)
- The lab also has full access to the instrumentation present at the UTSA MEMS Research Lab.
Other instrumentation in the Department
The Department of Chemistry provides access to the use of a wide variety of modern instrumentation such as:
-
MALDI-TOF (Bruker REFLEX III)
- HPLC (SpectraSystems)
- MS (Finnigan LCQ Duo, Finnigan TSQ 700, Fissons VG PlasmaQuad)
- GC/MS (Finnigan PolarisQ)
- NMR (Varian INOVA 500 MHz, Varian 300 MHz)
- FTIR (Bruker Equinox 55 FTIR)
- EPR (Bruker X-Band EMX 6/1-HX)
- X-Ray Difractometer
Other facilities
The University also provides access to a large number of journals and books though the John Peace Library, which is located 3 minutes away from the lab.
