Second Open House & Student Poster Session

The Chemistry Department at The University of Texas at San Antonio is holding an Open House on August 23, 2008. This Open House is intended to showcase our new Biotechnology Sciences and Engineering (BSE) Building and Ph.D. program, and to foster research collaborations within the region. You and your students are cordially invited. We plan to provide tours of the new research laboratories, information about our Ph.D. program, and also ample time for informal discussions. The formal program will begin at 9 A.M. and end at approximately 3 P.M. Coffee, juice, and pastries will be provided from 8:30-9:00 AM, in addition to a boxed lunch at noon.

The Open House will include a student poster session and we encourage your students to present their research at this activity. The deadline for submitting poster information is August 21, 2008. Please email the title of your presentation, author list, institution, address, email, phone/fax numbers to: chemistry@utsa.edu. The posters must be compatible with ACS standard pushpin friendly boards (3ft x 6ft) for general display. Poster presenters should be present to answer questions from 1 PM to 3 PM. Awards will be given for the best presentations.

Poster Award Winner

Congratulations are due to Erick Berdugo, a senior, for winning one of two poster awards at the November 2007 UTSA 2007 Engineering Sciences Business ESB Student Conference, for his poster entitled "Polymorphic behavior in the 1:1 co-crystal of 4,4’-bipyridine and urea". His co-authors were Michael A. Miller and Edward R.T. Tiekink

Chemistry Club

The Chemistry Club has been selected by the American Chemical Society Committee on Education to receive the award for its chapter conducted during the 2005-06 academic year. Congratulations to Dr. Candace M. Coyle and Dr. Michael Kurz for their outstanding work as the faculty mentors/advisors of the Club. This message was provided by Dr. E. Students in the news

Cristal Lindell (Chemistry Club President, Junior Chemistry Major) has just received an EPA Fellowship ($36,000) for the next two years to continue her research in Yellowstone National Park.

Maria Fernanda Mora has been awarded an Honorable Mention this year by the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS). FACSS exists to combine many small meetings, previously organized by individual societies, into an annual meeting that covers the whole of analytical chemistry. Mora will receive a complimentary registration for the FACSS meeting in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, as well as a certificate commemorating the award.

Jessica Felhofer, who is now working for Dr. Garcia and Dr. Merrill received the 2006 ACS-Division of Analytical Chemistry Award
