CRJ Faculty Member Invited to Teach at FBI Academy

Dr. Michael J. Gilbert, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice, has been invited to teach two modules related to law enforcement in society at two police executive training programs at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA in October 2008 and again in January 2009.  Dr. Gilbert will discuss Urban Patterns of Violence and Future Trends.  The second module will include the topics of Restorative Justice and the Implications for Public Safety and Police-Community Relations.

The training is organized and presented by the Behavioral Science Unit at the FBI Academy and is part of a curriculum presented to police executives from around the nation.

The FBI Futures Working Group has begun to apply the principles of restorative justice to community policing with “Neighborhood Driven Policing”.  This model extends community policing from police directed activities to community directed public safety activities.  In October 2008, Dr. Gilbert was a guest instructor at the FBI Academy at Quantico, VA where he addressed police executives from around the world.  His presentation focused on understanding urban patterns of violence, anticipated crime trends over the next 20-40 years and the potential of restorative and community justice principles and practices. As stated earlier, Dr. Gilbert is scheduled to return to the FBI Academy in January 2009 to train other groups of police executives.
