Practicum Training Program

Counseling  Services - The University of Texas at San Antonio

Program
Description

The University of Texas At San Antonio Counseling Services offers a clinical practicum/internship experience for trainees in Psychology, Social Work, and Counseling.
 
Clinical Activities:
   →
Individual counseling
     → Intake interviews (triage)
     → Consultation with clinical staff
     → Group co-facilitation may be available
Hours:
The training program requires a commitment for the summer orientation and the fall semester.  Preference is given to students who are interested in a placement for both the fall and spring semesters.

Summer:
     → 20 to 35 hour orientation program, depending on the trainee's experience, coursework, and progress during orientation
     → Flexible schedule
Fall:
     → 13 to 20 hours per week
     → Must be available every Friday from 9:30am to 12:30pm for case consultation and trainings
Spring:
     → 13 to 20 hours per week
     → Must be available every Friday from 9:30am to 12:30pm for case consultation and trainings
   

Program
Objectives
Practicum and intern trainees participate in a variety of activities intended to develop knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  > Counseling skills
  > Comprehensive intake interviews (triage)
  > Case conceptualization
  > Treatment planning
  > DSM-IV diagnoses
  > Clinical documentation/SOAP notes
  > Theoretical orientation
  > Cultural competency
  > Issues unique to a university population
  > Professional ethics and behavior
  > Effective use of supervision
  > Participation in a multidisciplinary team
  > Incorporate objectives from specific field of study or program
 

Supervision

 

 

Trainees receive the following supervision:

  > Individual supervision (one hour weekly)
  > Group supervision (one hour every two weeks)
  > Case consultation (one hour weekly)
  > Live supervision during initial triage
  > All counseling and triage sessions are recorded using webcams
 
Training All trainees receive orientation training to prepare them for providing services at Counseling Services and on-going training throughout the practicum experience.

Orientation training:

  = Basic counseling skills
  = Triage training including role-plays
  = Treating the college student
  = Depression
  = Anxiety
  = LD/ADHD screening
  = Risk assessment/management (suicide, homicide, self-injury, child/elder abuse, severe alcohol/drug abuse)
  = Diversity (cultural, GLBT, etc.)
  = Psychotherapeutic models
  = Community/campus resources
  = Termination

In-service training:
All trainees participate in weekly in-service trainings attended by all clinical staff.
 
Application Materials and
Deadlines
The following materials are required of all applicants:
  •  A current vita or resume
  •  A personal statement to include:
     - Reason for wanting to be a counselor
     - Reason for wanting to work at UTSA Counseling Services
  •  An unofficial transcript from all graduate programs attended
  •  One letter of recommendation from a clinical supervisor or a faculty member
  •  Finalists will be given an on-site interview

Application deadline:
All application materials are due to Dr. Richard Blask in Counseling Services by 5:00pm on Friday, June 11, 2010.
