This Pre-AP Mathematics Summer Institute will focus on preparing students in 6th grade through Algebra I for AP Calculus/AP Statistics. Participants will learn the purpose and value of the Advanced Placement program as well as how to incorporate skills, concepts, and rigor into their Pre-AP program. Teachers work together to experience and share ways to uncover the meaning and use of the concepts and basic skills needed for success in middle school Pre-AP mathematics. A variety of activities, strategies, and methods, including manipulatives, graphing calculators, and other tools, will be used to increase student understanding. Emphasis will be on exploration and problem solving algebraically, numerically, graphically, and verbally. This training will allow teachers to solve meaningful, authentic problems responsive to the needs of all students, including Pre-AP students. The workshop will focus on curriculum and instruction that will facilitate a student’s ability to access higher levels of mathematics. Participants will apply the Eight Standards for Mathematical Practice and identify qualities of rich mathematical tasks with a focus on communication and reasoning.
Participants should bring:
- A favorite project, lesson or activity to share
- A good math joke or comic strip
- Favorite websites for teaching math
- A TI 73 or TI84 graphing calculator if you have one (Calculators will be provided on site)
- A formative or summative assessment
- Pencils, highlighters, ruler and paper
- A USB drive so that you may save your work
