AP Summer Institute for Middle School Math

Below is information from AP Summer Institute workshops that were held in August 2014. Please stay tuned for next year's lineup.

Workshop Description

This Pre-AP Mathematics Summer Institute focused on preparing students in 6th grade through Algebra I for AP Calculus/AP Statistics.  Participants learned the purpose and value of the Advanced Placement program as well as how to incorporate skills, concepts, and rigor into their Pre-AP program.   Teachers worked together to experience and share ways to uncover the meaning and use of the concepts and basic skills needed for success in middle school Pre-AP mathematics. A variety of activities, strategies, and methods, including manipulatives, graphing calculators, and other tools, were used to increase student understanding. Emphasis was on exploration and problem solving algebraically, numerically, graphically, and verbally.  This training allowed teachers to solve meaningful, authentic problems responsive to the needs of all students, including Pre-AP students.  The workshop focused on curriculum and instruction that will facilitate a student’s ability to access higher levels of mathematics.  Participants applied the Eight Standards for Mathematical Practice and identify qualities of rich mathematical tasks with a focus on communication and reasoning.
