Cyber Security Initiative








The Apprentice track introduces entry-level information technology candidates to network security fundamentals and certain CompTIA certifications. After completion, participants may continue their education by completing the Cyber Security Technician track.

This track is comprised of three courses: Introduction to Voice and Data Security, CompTIA Network+ Prep Course, and the CompTIA Security+ Prep Course. Each course within the Apprentice Track takes one week. The entire track runs from September to October, as follows:

Course Information

Introduction to Voice and Data Security

 

Course Overview / Description

This course provides participants the opportunity to learn about the basic elements that comprise Voice and Data Security, and how those elements apply to protecting organizational and community information assets. This course includes both lecture and hands-on exercises.  After an overview of information security, management, policies, procedures, and planning, participants will conduct detailed explorations into areas such as network, wireless, and voice system security, operating system security, application hardening, and individual security.  Upon completion of this course, participants will understand the major tenets and issues of information security and how to relate them to themselves, their organizations and community.

Scope

This is an introductory level course for technical personnel new to information assurance.  Topics include information security policies, procedures, and planning, as well as physical, personnel, network, operating system, application, and individual security.  The primary focus of the course is network, operating system, application, and individual security.  Where possible, topics are reinforced with hands-on activities.  The class presents general information regarding a topic, then focuses on the threats and countermeasures for those threats.

Who Should Attend?

Personnel with between zero to four years’ work experience in general information technology such as networking (TCP/IP, protocols, ports, wireless, etc.) or system administration (operating systems, user accounts, etc.).

Prerequisites

Participants should have at least a basic user’s knowledge of popular operating systems such as Windows, Linux, or Mac. Experience with basic networking or system administration is helpful but not required. 

Course Length

The next course will be from September 22 - 26, 2014. This course will last 4 days, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with an hour break for lunch.

Students will be provided with a Participant Guide and all necessary handouts.

CompTIA NEtwork+ Prep Course

 

Course Overview / Description

This course prepares participants for the CompTIA Network+ certification examination. The course builds on your existing user-level knowledge and experience with personal computer (PC) operating systems and networks to present fundamental skills and concepts that you will use on the job in any type of networking career. Students will identify and describe all the major networking technologies, systems, skills, and tools in use in modern PC-based computer networks, and learn information and skills that will be helpful to prepare for the CompTIA Network+ certification examination, 2011 objectives. Exam registration is not included in this course.

Scope

The course covers the following domains specified by CompTIA Network+ examination objectives:

  • Network Concepts
  • Network Installation and Configuration
  • Network Media and Topologies
  • Network Management
  • Network Security

Who Should Attend? 

Network experience and the CompTIA A+ certification are helpful but not required. 

Prerequisites

An introductory course in a Windows operating system, or equivalent skills and knowledge, is recommended. CompTIA A+ certification, or the equivalent skills and knowledge, is helpful but not required. 

Course Length

This course will be September 29 -October 3, 2014. This course will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an hour break for lunch.

Participants will be provided with lecture and reference materials, textbook, including practice tests and answer keys. Courses hosted in CIAS facilities.

CompTIA Security+ Prep Course

 

Course Overview / Description

This course prepares IT/Security professionals for the CompTIA Security+ certification exam. 
Lectures cover all five examination domains required for the CompTIA Security+ exam in detail. Exam registration is not included in this course.

Scope

The course covers the following domains:

  • Network Security
  • Compliance and Operational Security
  • Threats and Vulnerabilities
  • Application, Data and Host Security
  • Access Control and Identity Management
  • Cryptography

Multiple practice tests will be used throughout the course.

Who Should Attend?

The CompTIA Security+ Certification is aimed at an IT security professional who wishes to pass the Security+ exam and who has:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in IT administration with a focus on security
  • Day to day technical information security experience
  • Broad knowledge of security concerns and implementation including the domains listed above

Prerequisites

Two years of experience in IT security is recommended, but not required.

Course Length

This course will be October 6 - 10, 2014. This course will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an hour break for lunch.

CompTIA Security+ All-in-One Exam Guide (3rd Edition), practice tests, answer keys and lecture materials are provided. Courses hosted in CIAS facilities.
