Getting Started with Direct Loans for New Borrowers

Step 1: Accept Your Stafford Loan(s)

  • You will need to log on to your ASAP account and click on Financial Aid and review your financial aid award, once you are able to view your loan(s), then accept it.

Step 2: Complete Your Stafford Loan Entrace Counseling

  • To complete your Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling, you will need to visit www.studentloans.gov.
  • You will need your social security number, the first two (2) characters of your last name, your date of bierth and your Department of Education issued PIN (the same PIN used for the FAFSA). If you have forgotten or do not have a Federal Student Aid PIN, please visit www.pin.ed.gov.
  • Once you have logged in, you will click on "Complete Counseling" and select "Entrance Counseling" and click "Start" to begin.
  • UTSA will receive notification from the Department of Education that your Entrance Counseling has been completed.

Step 3: Complete Your Electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN)

  • To complete your electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN), you will need to visit www.studentloans.gov.
  • You will need your social security number, the first two (2) characters of your last name, your date of birth, and your Department of Education issued PIN (the same PIN used for the FAFSA). If you have forgotten or do not have a Federal Student Aid PIN, please visit www.pin.ed.gov.
  • Once you have logged in, you will click on "Complete MPN" and select Master Promissory Note section and select "Subsidized/Unsubsidized".
  • Please complete the following steps:
    • Step 1 - Information
    • Step 2 - References
    • Step 3 - Terms & Conditions
    • Step 4 - Review & Sign
  • UTSA will receive notification that you have completed your eMPN successfully, once your stafford loan application(s) have been generated and returned from the Department of Education for disbursement processing.
