Grants

Grants are offered based on financial need as determined by the results of the FAFSA. Grants are gift funds that do not require repayment.

A student’s financial aid offer will include grant funds whenever guidelines and funding levels permit. Priority for grants is given to students that meet the priority deadline on January 15.

Grant funds are initially offered based on full-time enrollment status during the fall and spring semesters. If a student’s enrollment changes to three-quarter time or half-time status, grant funds will be reduced. Graduate students are not eligible for federal grants but may be eligible for state or institutional grants if they demonstrate need and meet specific requirements.

Your Grant amount is offered based on full-time enrollment. If you decide to enroll part-time, please note that your grants will pro-rate.

Federal Grants

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) offers a variety of federal grants to students attending four-year colleges or universities, community colleges, and career schools. The following federal grants are offered at UTSA.

The Federal Pell Grant is offered to undergraduate students who are seeking their first degree and demonstrate financial need. A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid.

Eligibility for this grant is determined from the FAFSA. The amount of Pell grant will be determined by the maximum set by the Department of Education, your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and your enrollment status. Students must also meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards.

Students who qualify for PELL can only receive it for a maximum of 6 years or 12 semesters of full-time enrollment. If a student has received the equivalent of 12 full-time semesters of Pell Grant, they will no longer be eligible for Pell Grant funding. You can track how much of your PELL is used at the National Student Loan Data System.

Summer Pell

Students can now receive up to 150% of their scheduled offer for one academic year. What does this mean? This means if you are full-time in fall and spring and use all of your Pell, you may be eligible for more Pell for summer if you register at least half time (6 hours). Pell Grant eligibility requirements still apply and all offers count towards the Lifetime Pell Grant Eligibility (LEU). Students must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress and have submitted the Summer Application for Financial Aid through their myUTSA Account.

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) is offered to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree. It is offered to students with exceptional financial need and first priority is given to students who have been offered the Federal Pell grant. The SEOG Grant is offered until funds are exhausted.

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant helps students who plan to teach in high-need fields at the secondary or elementary level.

If you fail to meet the requirements listed above, the TEACH Grant funds you received will change into a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. You will have to repay the entire loan with interest. Interest is charged from the day the money originally paid out.

To be Offered the TEACH Grant:

Hardship Appeals
Should you fail to meet the requirements for renewal, you may submit an appeal to review your eligibility based on extenuating circumstances.
