Volunteer Program
The Student Health Services Volunteer program provides students with an environment for professional preparation through hands on experience related to their field of study. The Student Health Services Volunteer program strives to provide academic enhancement and experience that is applicable to real-world settings. We have four volunteer opportunities in the following areas:
MD/PA Shadowing
Volunteers will be given the opportunity to shadow a Physician Assistant or Physician. The student will be able to observe the following:
Patient Interview techniques
Physical exam skills
Diagnostic testing (i.e. rapid flu, strep, etc.)
Review of laboratory findings
Discussion of assessments and plans
Nursing Shadowing
During the volunteer appointment, the student will be given the opportunity to shadow a Nurse. The student will be under the direct supervision of the Nurse. The student will observe the follow:
Nurse visits
Diagnostic testing
Immunization clinic
Health Education
During a Volunteer appointment in Health Education, the volunteer student will be given the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of Health Education activities. The volunteer student will be under the direction and supervision of a Health Education Coordinator.
The student may shadow/participate in the following activities:
Conducting health education presentations
Coordinating campus-wide health promotion campaigns
Participating in health education outreach events
Working with Health Advocate groups
Health Promotions & Marketing
During the volunteer appointment, the student will be given the opportunity to work under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Director of Health Promotions and Marketing. The activities include:
Health marketing strategies
Prepare articles for news outlets
Conduct social media activities
Campuswide health promotions
Use of website
Graphic design and artwork
Assist in the coordination of press conferences
Application Process
Applicants must submit the following items to Student Health Services as a hard copy:
cover letter,
signed and completed application,
and a resume.
After submission, you will receive an email to confirm receipt of your packet. The committee will notify internship candidates for interviews and placement will be announced within a few days.
All interns will need to complete a Criminal Background Check prior to the first day of the program.
Cover Letter
On your cover letter, briefly introduce yourself. Also describe your intention and interests in the internship experience at Student Health Services. If you need assistance in preparing your cover letter, speak to a representative at the Career Center.
Application
Fill out the application completely and in typed format. Handwritten applications are not accepted and will not be reviewed. Print out the application and sign the application (page 2).
