Proper Use and Care of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a way of correcting vision instead of using glasses. Many people prefer contact lenses to glasses, but contact lenses require special handling and cleaning. If lenses are not cared for properly, lenses can be lost or ruined. Lenses must be cleaned properly or they can cause eye irritations and even infections. There are many types of lenses; therefore, there are many types of cleaning systems. Most systems have four major components of cleaning: cleaning, disinfecting, enzymatic cleaning, and rinsing. Follow the directions given to you by your contact lens provider or the directions of your cleaning system. Be sure your cleaning system is specified for the type of lenses that you have. Be careful to thoroughly rinse your lenses after cleaning because the cleaning chemicals can burn your eyes. Also, it is usually a good idea to stay with one brand of cleaning system rather than switching from brand to brand. If you have daily wear contact lenses, it is very important to remove your lenses daily for cleaning. If you have extended wear lenses or disposable, follow the directions of your eye care professional. Contact lens wearers should use cosmetics with care. Makeup can be applied before or after the lenses are put in place. Cream eye shadows are usually easier to use with contacts than the powder eye shadows. Your contact lens provider can assist you with what types of cosmetics are best for you to use with your lenses. Always remove your lenses if you have any signs of irritation or infection, and have routine checkups by your eye care professional.
