Presentation Descriptions:

Presentations are 45 minutes to one hour in length.


The Health Education or Nursing staff can come to your classroom, housing or organization and present on a variety of topics. Presentation topics include: Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Safer Sex, Medical Self Care, Alcohol Poisoning, and Nutrition for the College Student, and others. Listed below is a complete list of topics. If there are other topics you would prefer, we can tailor a presentation to suit your needs.

"Welcome to Student Health Services"

Guided tour of UTSA Student Health Services, services available, and how improved health can benefit the UTSA student. Current topics such as nutrition, safer sex, binge drinking, alcohol poisoning, diabetes etc. to be included with handouts.

 

SHADES "What you didn't learn in High School"

One our presentations by Peer Educators on sexual health, HIV, Hepatitis, and Substance Abuse. Interactive presentation with prizes!

 

"Over The Counter/Prescription Drug Use and Abuse"

An ask the doctor presentation format, which will be presented by Dr. Beth Wichman.

 

 

"Nutrition for the Hungry College Student"    

Learn proper nutrition principles and how to eat better for energy, growth, weight maintenance and brain power! Eating on the run, portion power and dining hall strategies to be discussed. Grab and Go recipes to be handed out.

 

 

"Student Self-Care" 

What’s the difference between a cold/flu?  What can I do at home?  When should I see a doctor?  What is a medical emergency?  What to bring to SHS?  What should you have in your first aid kit/medicine chest in your room?  Learn how to manage your own health to enhance your academic performance.

 

"Behind Closed Doors: STD and Safer Sex Savvy"

Information about prevalent STD’s, Signs and Symptoms and Prevention.  Safer Sex talk about pregnancy prevention options.

 

 

"Alcohol Poisoning"

Learn how not to drink to death and how to save your friends. Each year 4500-college students die each year due to alcohol accidents and accidental poisonings.  Learn about blood alcohol levels, responsible drinking, warning signs of alcohol poisonings and when to call EMS.

 

 

"Breast Cancer Awareness"

In celebration of breast health month in October, students will learn about how to do a monthly self-exam with breast models and when to see a doctor.

 

 

 

"Up in Smoke"

Preparing to quit for the Great American Smokeout.  Each year millions of Americans quit smoking and so can you!   Learn coping strategies to get you through the first 24 hours of being smoke free and hopefully for good!

 

 

"Are You Ready for Change?"

 Fast tips on nutrition, exercise, safer sex, alcohol quiz and stress management.  Great way to motivate students at beginning of semesters and New Year.

 

 

"First AID 101"

Standard First Aid (5 1/2 hours) (American Red Cross)


Prepare your organization with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize, and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. This course covers first aid and adult CPR. Workplace Training: Standard First Aid with AED is available in a 6 ½ hour course with AED training included. Minimum of 10 students. Cost: $20.00

"Tattoos, Piercings and their Care"

It seems like no matter where you go these days, tattoos and piercing are noticeable.  These forms of decorations may be used to express individuality, to indicate membership in a group or to attract attention.  Before you do this, there are some things you might want to know  before going under the needle.

Body modification can carry with it the risk of health problems.  These problems can range from minor infections to life-threatening illness.  If you are considering a tattoo or piercing understand your risks and research the process beforehand.
