SHADES @ UTSA

Who We Are

SHADES stands for Sexual Health Alcohol and Drug Education for Students. SHADES is dedicated to providing information about these issues facing college students so we can make educated choices.

This year UTSA Student Health Services received a federal grant to promote awareness of HIV, alcohol, and other drug abuse. SHADES was created under this grant with the goal to reach other students through presentations and programs, empowering students to make healthy life choices.

Please take a moment to complete our survey. We appreciate your time! (If the survey is temporarily down, please try again soon!)

What to Expect at a SHADES Presentation

Our presentations are about 90 minutes, interactive, informative, and fun. We bring freebies like condoms and lubrication, and refreshments are available upon request. From now until October 10, all participants will receive a free t-shirt or backpack and a goodie bag for attending a presentation.

As part of the federal grant UTSA received, SHADES is required to conduct a pre- and post-test at each presentation. The information collected (race/ethnicity, age, and the answers to the survey questions) is only used for statistical purposes for the grant.

Sexual Health

We talk about what sex means, what some of the outcomes can be, and how to do it more safely. A discussion of abstinence, monogamy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV, condoms and birth control are part of our presentation.

Alcohol and Drug

Alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, prescription, club and predatory drugs - we discuss it all. We talk about what constitutes these drugs, how they affect the body, health and legal consequences of using, and how to lessen or stop the use of alcohol and other drugs.

Education for Students

The peer educators in SHADES have received over thirty hours of training. Our goal is not to blast everyone with bad news and say never to drink or have sex. We intend to share the information we have learned and present the issues in a safe, discussion environment so that each person can make his or her own decision. Of course we promote the healthier choices, but these issues have as many SHADES of gray as there are people.
