The Honors College

Research & Honors Thesis

Members of the Honors College are encouraged to participate in undergraduate research, and undergraduate research (or creative activity) is required for students who wish to graduate with Tier 2 (highest) Honors from the Honors College.

HON 4913, Honors Independent Study

HON 4913 is an independent-study course option offered through the Honors College. Students may enroll in HON 4913 with any UTSA tenured or tenure-track instructor and earn Honors credit for participation in research. Students who wish to enroll in HON 4913 with an instructor who is not a tenured or tenure-track faculty member must seek permission from the Associate Dean of the Honors College.

Honors Thesis

All students who wish to graduate with Tier 2 Honors must complete an Honors thesis. More information on the Honors Thesis is available from the Office of the Honors College or by downloading the Honors Thesis Handbook from the forms page.

The Thesis Information Form should be completed and submitted by students that are beginning the thesis process. This information will keep the Honors College up to date on the direction that you are taking on your thesis research, and document the members of your thesis advisory committee.

Thesis Templates

Template Instructions:

HonorsThesisProposalTemplate.doc should be used by thesis students that are in the first semester of 4993 and developing their thesis proposal. The section headings for your thesis proposal should be similar to those included in the template.

HonorsThesisTemplate.doc should be used by thesis students that are in the second semester of 4993 and completing their thesis research. The section headings for your complete thesis should be similar to those included in the template.

Each template contains several phrases that are highlighted in yellow on the first 3 pages, which should be corrected for your project (e.g., Thesis Title, Author’s Name, Month and Year of Graduation). Also, an indexed Table of Contents is included that refers to Chapters as Heading 1, and sub-sections as Heading 2. These are guides for using Word’s indexing tools and automatically building the Table of Contents.

Indices titled List of Tables and List of Figures at the beginning of the thesis documents could also be automatically built using similar tools in Word, by using the caption style for tables and figures that appear in the body of the thesis.

Please contact Dr. Kyle Murray for assistance or questions related to the use of these templates, and thesis organization or content at Kyle.Murray@utsa.edu.
