            2008 Honors College China Program   

                    Main Stops: Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Xian

Brief description of the class:

This field-based course will trace political, cultural and economic changes in contemporary China (from 1953 to the present) by through a 3-week visit to China. The program will begin in Shanghai, the iconic city of modern Chinese history – a fusion of “old” Chinese capitalism and modern Western capitalism. The rest of the program will cover historical and political events that have shaped China by visiting cities such as Nanjing, Xian, and Beijing. Beijing, the capital city of the new People’s Republic, provides authoritative experience to examine the forces that have set China onto a path from which China has emerged as a new world economic power. Throughout the course students will be required to complete written assignments and group projects.
