2.11 Annual Faculty Performance Appraisal for Merit Consideration

The Board of Regents of The University of Texas System supports Employee Performance Appraisal programs endorsed by the Governor's Office and requires a formal performance appraisal of all personnel, including administrators, faculty and staff, at each UT System institution. On September 1, 1982, the policy became effective that the performance of all tenure track faculty at The University of Texas at San Antonio will be appraised annually for the purpose of merit review for annual budget consideration and preparation.

The annual review of each tenure track faculty member's performance shall be conducted by the Division Director after the end of the fall semester. The review period will be from January 1 to December 31. Faculty members shall submit to the Division Director each year an Annual Report for the period January 1 to December 31. The Division Director will complete a Performance Appraisal Form for each faculty member in his or her division.

The Division Director shall meet individually with each faculty member after the end of the fall semester to review his or her performance. The faculty member may attach his or her written statement to the appraisal if desired. The completed Appraisal Form will be reviewed by the Dean and will be placed in the faculty member's file in his or her division.

Upon written request, the faculty member will be provided a copy of the completed appraisal form. Otherwise, all materials related to a faculty performance appraisal will remain confidential to the extent permitted by the Texas Public Information Act, Section 552.102, Vernon's Texas Civil Statues.

The following criteria will be used:

  1. Teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

  2. Research, creative activities and other scholarly effort appropriate to the faculty member's academic discipline.

  3. Advising, counseling and other student services.

  4. Administrative and committee service in the Division, College and University.

  5. Public service to the community, state and nation.

  6. Special recognition, such as fellowships, grants, honors, and election to office in scholarly or professional organizations.

Division Directors shall certify, through the Dean of the College, to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs that the review has been completed.
