United Way Days of Caring: Labor of Love Project

During the 2008 Days of Caring, a United Way effort that brings together businesses throughout the San Antonio area for a day of volunteering, UTSA students, staff & faculty volunteers will have the opportunity to restore the resting place of patients of the San Antonio State Hospital. Historically, patients admitted to the San Antonio State Hospital have always had little family support.  During 1892-1924 those that died at the facility were buried on the hospital grounds in Cemetery 1.  Recently the ongoing project, Labor of Love, was launched to not only rehabilitate cemetery 1, but to alsoSpacer initiate a research project to locate family members who may not be aware their loved ones are buried here.  At this time, the hospital is in need of volunteers to help reset those original headstones.

A New Face on Campus: Matthew Morris, AmeriCorps VISTA

Matthew Morris

Who is this new guy in the ICE center and what is he doing?

Matthew Morris is a 2008-2009 Americorps VISTA. A recent graduate of Huston-Tillotson University (Austin, TX), Matthew has made a commitment to fight poverty with passion through a year of service in Americorps as a Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA).

The role of AmeriCorps VISTA is to build capacity and sustainable infrastructures in the community and on campuses. UTSA is part of a VISTA collaborative entitled Texas Campus Compact which promotes Service-Learning and is committed to the civic purposes of higher education. Americorps VISTAs advocate for responsible citizenship skills, aid in the development of campus-community partnerships and support faculty who integrate Service-Learning in their classroom.

Matthew’s role as a VISTA involves creating and maintaining relationships with self-identified student organizations as well as community agencies; informing them of the services provided by the Volunteer Services Office. Although Matthew will take on many roles while at UTSA his main objective is to increase student awareness of and opportunities for service and civic engagement on campus and in the San Antonio community.

Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Questioning Pride Month at UTSA!

Pride

Nationally, two events are celebrated: Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender History Month in October and Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Pride Month in June.

At UTSA we combine these to Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Questioning (GLBTQ) Pride Month, which is celebrated in October.  Just as with other history and pride months at UTSA, GLBTQ Pride Month is a time to celebrate, educate, and learn and raise awareness about the GLBTQ community.

This year as part of GLBTQ Pride Month, we will have several events:

Night OUT at the Movies ~ Thursday October 9  7:00 p.m.  Location TBA

National Coming Out Day ~ Monday October 13  11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  UC Paseo

Night OUT at the Movies: The Sequel ~ Wednesday October 22  7:00 p.m.  UC Retama Auditorium

Gayla ~ GLBTQ + friends social mixer (costumes are encouraged)  Wednesday October 29  7:00 p.m.  UC Ballroom 2

We hope to see you at the events!

Organization Spotlight: GLBTQ On Campus

Pride flag

Do you want to get involved? Do you want to have fun? Do you want to support the Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender, and Questioning Community? Then we are looking for you!

Students are now coming together to form an exciting new organization that is focused on creating a social support network for members of the UTSA Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, and Questioning community. This organization is a response to the overwhelming need for such a group on campus. This point was recently made clear by the sheer number of students at the recent GLBTQ Cultural Connections Reception held on August 26, 2008.

With the encouragement and support of the UTSA Allies program and the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center, students from diverse backgrounds are working hard toward getting this exciting new organization off the ground and running! But we can not do this without you! We are currently still looking for devoted and passionate people who want to be officers, members, and most importantly, be active participants in the new GLBTQ organization. Will you be there?

These are exciting times here at UTSA and in the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center! To find out how you can join us simply email or call us at: engaged@utsa.edu or 210-458-4770; or as always “Come N’ Chill” with us in the ICE Center at UC 2.01.04.
