A New Face on Campus: Matthew Morris, AmeriCorps VISTA |
Who is this new guy in the ICE center and what is he doing?
Matthew Morris is a 2008-2009 Americorps VISTA. A recent graduate of Huston-Tillotson University (Austin, TX), Matthew has made a commitment to fight poverty with passion through a year of service in Americorps as a Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA).
The role of AmeriCorps VISTA is to build capacity and sustainable infrastructures in the community and on campuses. UTSA is part of a VISTA collaborative entitled Texas Campus Compact which promotes Service-Learning and is committed to the civic purposes of higher education. Americorps VISTAs advocate for responsible citizenship skills, aid in the development of campus-community partnerships and support faculty who integrate Service-Learning in their classroom.
Matthew’s role as a VISTA involves creating and maintaining relationships with self-identified student organizations as well as community agencies; informing them of the services provided by the Volunteer Services Office. Although Matthew will take on many roles while at UTSA his main objective is to increase student awareness of and opportunities for service and civic engagement on campus and in the San Antonio community.

Steven says that the Spanish culture has allowed him to appreciate other cultures, especially other cultures within the Latino community. “I like to learn about the Latino culture, history and social issues and participate in creating programming and awareness to promote Latino heritage. Understanding someone’s culture is not just reading books, it’s being active within the community and participating in their traditions.”

Organization Spotlight: GLBTQ On Campus
Do you want to get involved? Do you want to have fun? Do you want to support the Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender, and Questioning Community? Then we are looking for you!
Students are now coming together to form an exciting new organization that is focused on creating a social support network for members of the UTSA Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, and Questioning community. This organization is a response to the overwhelming need for such a group on campus. This point was recently made clear by the sheer number of students at the recent GLBTQ Cultural Connections Reception held on August 26, 2008.
With the encouragement and support of the UTSA Allies program and the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center, students from diverse backgrounds are working hard toward getting this exciting new organization off the ground and running! But we can not do this without you! We are currently still looking for devoted and passionate people who want to be officers, members, and most importantly, be active participants in the new GLBTQ organization. Will you be there?
These are exciting times here at UTSA and in the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center! To find out how you can join us simply email or call us at: engaged@utsa.edu or 210-458-4770; or as always “Come N’ Chill” with us in the ICE Center at UC 2.01.04.
