Do You Need to Chill?

Join the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center on December 5th as we celebrate the final “First Friday” of the fall semester in the UC 1 Ski Lodge from 11am- 1pm. The ICE Center will be providing FREE HOT CHOCOLATE, FREE WASSAIL*, FREE COOKIES, as well as an opportunity to CREATE ORNAMENTS and WRITE LETTERS for the residents of the Ronald McDonald House (Monetary donations to RMHC are also welcomed)**. Students are invited to “Come N Chill” with fellow students and unwind as the semester comes to an end.

“First Friday” is the ICE Center’s take on the monthly First Friday events held in the arts district of San Antonio. “First Friday” at UTSA is an opportunity for students to unwind and celebrate being a student. Past “First Friday” events have included free t-shirts, free snow cones, free caramel apples, raffles for haunted house tickets, and recently a joint event with the Diversity Month Celebration and the Mystical Arts of Tibet.

* Wassail is a hot, spiced punch often associated with Christmas. Particularly popular in Germanic countries, the term itself is a contraction of the Anglo-Saxon term, “wæs hæil,” meaning; "Be healthy".

Student Leader Spotlight

Rachel Finn

Rachel Finn is a pre-medical psychology major and member of the Honors College who will be graduating from UTSA this spring. Rachel has been involved with many organizations over the years including Alpha Chi, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key, and Psi Chi Honor Society in Psychology. Most of her leadership work, though, has been with the Student Health Organization (SHO), a group that she co-founded and is currently serving as President. Rachel said, “We have worked hard to recruit members and promote health education and awareness on campus for the last two years. We are so excited to have grown into an organization that people in the UTSA community know and respect. If you want to volunteer by doing health outreach at UTSA, SHO is the organization for you!”

When asked about her experience at UTSA Rachel said, “I love UTSA because of all the opportunities it has afforded me.” Some of those opportunities include working with beluga whales at Sea World as part of her Honors Thesis, studying abroad in Italy, and mentoring peers as an RA and Peer Class Leader. Rachel plans to attend medical school in Texas, entering in fall 2009.

Student Health Organization meets every other Monday in the UC Oak Room, 2.01.20 at 7 pm. More information about SHO can be found at www.utsa.edu/health/sho and on Facebook.
