UTSA

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT | DECEMBER 2011

Dear Friends,

This is a time that is all about transitions and opening new worlds.

As the calendar year and semester close, more than 3,000 students will walk the stage at Commencement ceremonies this week. They will make a transition into the workforce with many continuing in higher education – representing UTSA in the community, the nation and internationally.

These students attained their goals through hard work and advocacy from their families, friends, faculty, staff and UTSA supporters – and we are so proud to see them graduate. They are prepared to be globally conscious, well-rounded leaders, capable of not just getting a job but of thinking critically with the potential to impact industry and the world.

As an emerging research university, UTSA awards more than 5,000 diplomas each year including nearly 80 doctoral degrees essential to achieving premiere research status. UTSA now has a worldwide base of more than 85,000 graduates, and as ongoing members of the UTSA family, alumni support is key in advancing the university and bringing success to future students. This success also comes because of community support for scholarships, athletics, the arts and other programs. We couldn’t do it without you.

Locally and regionally, the university gives back with more than $1.2 billion in annual business revenues and developing research partnerships with top medical, military and corporate groups in and outside South Texas. Globally, in 2010, more than 700 UTSA faculty and staff members participated in research, seminars, study abroad and exchange programs in 35 countries. In the last decade, more than 1,000 students participated in study-abroad programs.

Our Roadrunner wings are spreading wide, and we know UTSA is having a growing impact. In the new calendar year, watch for information about the next phase of our campaign to become a Tier One research university.

Harriett and I wish the best for everyone this holiday season. Be safe, and enjoy and cherish your time with family and other loved ones, as we look forward to the exciting things to come in 2012.

Sincerely,

Ricardo Romo
President,

The University of Texas at San Antonio
