The College of Sciences Presidential Scholarship

The College of Sciences Presidential Scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students who are declared or pre-Biology majors in the College of Sciences.  The number and amount of awards will be contingent upon the availability of scholarship funding.
Estimated value of the award: $2,000-$3,000

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (at least 12 credit hours each semester) or graduate student (at least 9 credit hours each semester), unless completing the final semester at the university.
  • Must be a declared major in the College of Sciences.*
  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum SAT score of 1090 and/or a minimum ACT score of 24 and a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Current UTSA students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

*College of Sciences majors:  Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Geology, Multidisciplinary Science, Mathematics, and Physics.

The College of Sciences Dean’s Scholarship

This scholarship is available to incoming freshmen who are declared or pre-Biology majors in the College of Sciences.  The number and amount of awards will be contingent upon the availability of scholarship funding.
Estimated value of the award: $1,000

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate (at least 12 credit hours each semester).
  • Must be a declared major in the College of Sciences.*
  • Must have completed no more than 12 hours of college course work by the beginning of the fall semester.  Credits earned by examination are not counted in the 12-hour limit.
  • Must have at least a 3.0 cumulative high school grade point average and at least a 3.0 grade point average in all college courses taken.
  • Must have a combined SAT score of at least 1000 with a score of at least 560 on the mathematics section, or an ACT composite score of at least 24 with a score of at least 25 on the mathematics section.
  • Must have completed the college preparatory curriculum in high school to include at least four years of mathematics (through pre-calculus or trigonometry) and at least three years of science.
  • Must rank in the top 20% of their high school graduating class.

AFCEA Annual Cyber Security Scholarship

The AFCEA Annual Cyber Security Scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing cyber security or information assurance related concentrations.  The amount of the award will be contingent upon the availability of scholarship funding.
Estimated value of the award: $2,500-$5,000.

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (at least 12 credit hours each semester) or graduate student (at least 9 credit hours each semester).
  • Must be pursuing a cyber security or information assurance related concentration
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 for entering sophomores, 3.0 for juniors or seniors, or a 3.2 for graduate students (on a 4.0 scale).

The Emily Zachry Ansley Endowed Scholarship

The Emily Zachry Ansley Endowed Scholarship is available to undergraduate students who are declared or pre-Biology majors in the College of Sciences.  The amount of the award will be contingent upon the availability of scholarship funding. This scholarship rotates between the College or Sciences (in even-numbered years) and the College of Business (in odd-numbered years).
Estimated value of the award: $2,500-$3,000

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (at least 12 credit hours each semester).
  • Must be a declared major in the College of Sciences.*
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Must be a Texas resident and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must demonstrate the need for financial assistance as determined by the University of Texas at San Antonio Office of Student Financial Aid. A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be on file with that office by the application deadline below.

The Joseph J. Gdovin, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

The Joseph J. Gdovin, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is available to undergraduate students who are declared or pre-Biology majors in biology or other related life sciences.  The number and amount of awards will be contingent upon the availability of scholarship funding.
Estimated value of the award: $1,600-$2,000

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (at least 12 credit hours each semester), unless the student is completing their final semester at the university.
  • Must be a declared major in biology or other related life sciences at the sophomore level or above.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Recipients must demonstrate recognizable academic merit, as determined by the selection committee.
  • This scholarship is renewable on a semester by semester basis if all criteria are met. 
  • Must demonstrate the need for financial assistance as determined by the University of Texas at San Antonio Office of Student Financial Aid. A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be on file with that office by the application deadline below.

Kaplan MCAT Award

The Kaplan MCAT Award is available to undergraduate students who are pursuing degrees in the College of Sciences. The recipient will receive free enrollment in a Kaplan MCAT preparation course.
Estimated value of the award: $1,500.

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Recipient(s) must be enrolled in at least 12 hours if undergraduate and actively pursuing a degree at The University of Texas at San Antonio, or its successor. An exception may be made on a case-by-case basis when the student is not required to take 12 or 9 credit hours to graduate, provided the student is enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Must be juniors or seniors pursuing a degree in a department within the College of Sciences.

The Dr. Harold G. Longbotham Endowed Scholarship

The Harold G. Longbotham Endowed Scholarship is available to full-time undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Sciences who are majors in mathematics, statistics or physics.  The amount of the award will be contingent upon the availability of scholarship funding.
Estimated value of the award: $3,500

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (at least 12 credit hours each semester) or graduate student (at least 9 credit hours each semester), unless completing a final semester at the university.
  • Must be actively pursuing a degree in mathematics, statistics or physics, statistics.
  • Must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Undergraduate applicants must be at least juniors with a minimum of 60 hours completed.

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (at least 12 credit hours each semester), unless completing the final semester at the university, or incoming freshman for the fall semester. 
  • Must be a declared major in the College of Sciences.*
  • Must have graduated from a San Antonio area high school. 
  • Entering freshmen must have had at least a B average in high school.
  • Current students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.   
  • Must demonstrate the need for financial assistance as determined by the University of Texas at San Antonio Office of Student Financial Aid. A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be on file with that office by the application deadline below.

The Sam Madrid, Jr. Endowed Scholarship was established in the fall of 1994, and named after a native San Antonio engineer with a long record of professional and community achievement.  Mr. Madrid was involved in establishing the Engineering Program at The University of Texas at San Antonio.

The North Loop 410 Association, Inc. Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is available to undergraduate students who are declared or pre-Biology majors in the College of Sciences.  The amount of award will be contingent upon the availability of scholarship funding.  This scholarship is renewable on a competitive basis if all eligibility criteria are met.
Estimated value of the award: $300-$400

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (at least 12 credit hours each semester), unless completing the final semester at the university.
  • Must be a declared major in the College of Sciences.*
  •  Must have completed at least 30 semester credit hours.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Must be a Texas resident.

Application Requirements:

  • Application form
  • Two (2) recommendation forms completed by UTSA faculty members of the student’s choice
  • Written statement about the student’s most distinctive honor (300 words or fewer.)

The Bernard P. Sagik Memorial Scholarship

The Bernard P. Sagik Memorial Scholarship is available to undergraduate students who are declared or pre-Biology majors in the College of Sciences.  The amount of the award will be contingent upon the availability of scholarship funding.
Estimated value of the award: $600-$700

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (at least 12 credit hours each semester), unless completing the final semester at the university.
  • Must be a declared major in the College of Sciences.*
  • Must have successfully completed at least 24 hours of course work at the University of Texas at San Antonio with an overall cumulative grade point average at UTSA of 2.8 or better (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Applicant must submit a written statement describing their background and academic goals.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are of the first generation of their family to attend or graduate from an institution of higher education.  Within this preference, academic merit and subsequently financial need may be considered.
  • This scholarship will be renewed on an annual basis for up to four years if all eligibility criteria are met.

The Dr. B. Thyagarajan Endowed Scholarship is available to undergraduate students who are majors in chemistry, geology or physics.  The number and amount of awards will be contingent upon the availability of scholarship funding.
Estimated value of the award: $1,100

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (at least 12 credit hours each semester).
  • Must be a freshman or sophomore student.
  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum SAT score of 860 or a minimum ACT score of 18 and rank in the top 50% of their high school graduating class.
  • Current students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.6 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Must be a major in chemistry, geology or physics.
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate the need for financial assistance as determined by the University of Texas at San Antonio Office of Student Financial Aid. A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be on file with that office by the application deadline below.

The USAA Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is available for undergraduate (including incoming freshmen) and graduate students who are declared or pre-Biology majors in the College of Sciences.  The number and amount of awards will be contingent upon the availability of scholarship funding.
Estimated value of the award: $2,500-$3,000

Eligibility Criteria (as of fall, 2012):

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (at least 12 credit hours each semester) or graduate student (at least 9 credit hours each semester), unless completing the final semester at the university, or an incoming freshman or transfer student for the fall semester.
  • Must be declared majors in the College of Sciences.*
  • Incoming freshman must have a high school cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and a minimum SAT composite score of 1090 (without the writing score) or a minimum ACT composite score of 24.
  • Current undergraduate and graduate students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
