Continued... Recognizing 10 years of Leadership through Omicron Delta Kappa at UTSA

First, they wanted to recognize those who have attained a high standard of efficiency in collegiate activities. Not only did they want to recognize those who had accomplished this goal, but they were committed to inspiring others to strive for this high standard. Second, they wanted to bring together the most representative students in all phase of collegiate life. They wanted to create an organization, which would help mold the sentiment of the institution on questions of local and intercollegiate interest. Finally, they strived to bring together members of the faculty, student body, and other Omicron Delta Kappa members on a basis of mutual interest, understanding, and helpfulness. They believed through the sharing of opportunities and experience, not only would they benefit, but the campus would as well.

ODK has five indispensible qualifications for membership into the UTSA Circle. First, a member must exhibit exemplary character. These members must be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, caring, reasonable, and involved. Second, a member must meet qualifications in leadership. This responsibility can be in service throughout the campus or in community life. Third, ODK members must submit to superior scholarship. To be eligible for membership, a student must hold a 3.0 GPA or higher. Fourth, a member must demonstrate genuine fellowship. This fellowship is a community of interest that allows for growth. Finally, ODK members must consecrate to democratic ideals.

In attendance were ODK's first president, Angeles Borrego, and first faculty advisors, Dr. Rex and Mary Ball. Andrea Barrington, ODK's 2008-2009 President, hosted the evening. Dr. Patricia Graham, an active charter member since 1999, spoke about the circles last 10 years of accomplishments. Charlin Jones, ODK's current Faculty Secretary, member since 2004, and advisor since 2005, was also in attendance. These members have been a constant support to the ODK circle over the last 10 years. They have worked with the organization to ensure its full potential. The support of these members has made ODK a success today.

After recognizing ODK's charter members, the evening concluded with information regarding the alumni Circle of ODK and scholarship information. Currently, ODK is forming an alumni circle to serve UTSA and San Antonio. The goal of the alumni circle is twofold. The circle first, would like to raise enough money for a book scholarship. The ultimate goal of the circle is to raise enough money to provide full tuition for an ODK member for a full academic school year. The scholarship would be available for any current UTSA Circle member could apply. As the evening concluded, the alumni circle had already raised $380 dollars toward this scholarship. The UTSA Circle is very proud of its long history and hopes for continued success in the future. Throughout the last 10 years, the UTSA Circle has upheld a tradition on campus that exemplifies the purpose of the ODK society. This tradition will continue through responsible leaders and encouraging faculty and staff.
