National Hazing Prevention Week Observed Among Organizations... continued

"It's important to hear from the students and try to understand where they might have difficulties defining hazing," said Kelsey Bratcher, assistant director of Student Activities for risk education, alcohol and drug programs. "If we don't find out where the students are in the education process, it will harder to progress in the education and prevention process."

During the meetings, students had the opportunity to share their thoughts about organization activities and where there would be a risk for potential hazing.

"We engage our students during town hall meetings in an effort to raise awareness about hazing and prevent it," said Barry McKinney, director of Student Activities.

On Thursday, Be A Responsible Roadrunner hosted their monthly Thirsty Thursday event with the assistance of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. The two organizations handed out bottled water to those passing by and delivered a hazing prevention message.

"It was great to help another group reach out to the student body and be a part of positive education," said Jon Narvaez, freshman undeclared major and member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

In the past three years, four organizations have been found in violation of hazing. The University has made a concerted effort in the last few years to educate students and student organizations about hazing. Various programming and education training has taken place to make sure that students, especially those at the greatest risk, know what is hazing and how to report hazing.
