University Center Staff Represent UTSA at Region 12 Conference... continued

Five students from Events Management & Conference Services, the Business office, Ops, the Roost and the Information Center attended the conference. Each one of them received "Student Leadership Track" certification by attending educational sessions designed to help develop student leaders. Leadership Track topics included how to motivate followers, time management, and leadership personal assessment tools.

"The whole environment of the weekend was extraordinary," said Events Management & Conference Services student employee Will Gomez. "I really enjoyed the diverse setting that led to new friends, ideas, and strategies that will not only help the future progress of our UC but for my life and career as well."

Student Manager Raylene Lopez and UC Retail Manager Angela Hicks conducted an education session on the important role student managers play in the UC Information Center and provided tips and guidelines to help other unions use student managers to mentor and develop students. Other UC staff attended sessions on video contests, managing student-run businesses in the student union setting, and audio visual trouble shooting.

Another feature of the conference was the ability to tour student union buildings at UT Arlington and Texas Christian University.

"I really enjoyed seeing how the other buildings operate and getting ideas on how we can improve the UC Information Center," said Angela Hicks, UC retail manager and information center supervisor. "It also helped me to appreciate how technologically advanced we are with projection and laptop hook ups in every single conference room."

In addition to participation at the conference, UC employees take an active role with ACUI behind the scenes. Tabitha Byrne, assistant director of UC programs served on the conference planning team and was in charge of educational sessions. UC Director Lowa Mwilambwe serves as business manager on the regional leadership team for Region 12, which includes schools in Texas, Louisiana and Mexico.
