Each year, Joyce volunteers more than 150 hours to the San Antonio community. Some local agencies where she donates her time include Encino Park Elementary PTA, Boy Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity and, of course, the Alumni Association. In May 2009, President Ricardo Romo presented her with the U.S. Presidential Bronze Medal of Service. All UTSA employees and students are eligible to participate in this national program each year.

More importantly, Joyce and Seth have made "giving back" a family affair. "Seth and I both feel it is important to instill a sense of giving at an early age," she said. "By making volunteerism a family event it has become second nature to our children."

As their children have grown, their volunteer interests and responsibilities have also evolved from affixing mailing labels to sorting canned foods. Today, their children have their own interests in specific nonprofit agencies in which they want to volunteer during the year.

Each year, Joyce and Seth volunteer at the Texas Folklife Festival alumni booth where they serve up cold beer and friendly hellos. "The Folklife Festival is my favorite city event because you can travel the world without leaving San Antonio! And it's fun," she said.

Joyce, like many other UTSA alumni volunteers, believes giving back to UTSA is important to making the university successful.

Joyce Fox exemplifies how volunteerism instills a deep appreciation of others while helping individuals discover new perspectives, and ultimately grow. Joyce, the Alumni Association salutes you as our noteworthy volunteer. We agree with your colleagues at UTSA: You are "The Fox that rocks!"
