2010 GLBTQ Scholarship Fundraiser

Tyler Clementi, Asher Brown, Seth Walsh, Justin Aaberg, Raymond Chase and Billy Lucas. Names that recently we have all become too chillingly familiar with in the past month. My heart goes out to not only these 6 young men and their families, but to anyone who's ever had to face the torment and abuse of bullying sometime in their lives.

I know firsthand the pain of being put down for being gay. Deciding to live an open lifestyle in Helotes, Texas at O'Connor high school wasn't exactly the easiest of things. Being told you're worthless day in and day out, being shoved into lockers, and seeing the true hatred mankind can throw at you can easily lead someone to suicidal thoughts. But luckily I had those who showed me kindness, love, and the friendship that can only come from a true revolutionary, who is willing to put aside what society may deem “evil” or “corrupt” and speak up for those who too often cannot speak for themselves. They tell the world that there are no monsters in the closet, only people. I know I speak on behalf of all the scholarship recipients when I say it is truly heartwarming that someone is willing to help out the youth of the LGBT community by donating to a wonderful scholarship fund that we all have so graciously received.

This scholarship has allowed me to focus more attention to school and the GLBTQ, and a little less on work. This year I was appointed as Political Committee Chair for the organization, and I am currently working with over a dozen organizations on our upcoming National Coming Out Day fair on Monday, along with helping to organize many more events throughout the year. This scholarship has allowed me to spend time with people that make me feel more at home than I have ever felt in my whole life. I call the GLBTQ home, and am glad to have met all the people I have in the mere start of my college career.

People such as those who donate to scholarships like this, or do their part to stand up for what is right, save lives. They tell LGBT youth that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. They show that there is absolutely no reason that a 13 year old should put a shotgun to his head and take his own life. And one day I hope that I can pay it forward by helping out the youth of tomorrow with my contributions. I hope that we can all look forward to a world filled with no hate, and only love. But until then, I will keep fighting for my rights, for our rights, for our grand children's rights. We shouldn't need a single child dead to tell us that there is an epidemic of hate, and in the famous words of Harvey Milk,” you just gotta give em hope”. Thank you.

New Home for Writing Center, Supplemental Instruction and Tutoring Services opens in John Peace Library

“Students will have a much easier time finding the Tutoring program and attending regularly scheduled SI study groups,” says Leticia Duncan-Brosnan, Executive Director of the TRC. “The new library location will also provide students with convenient access to the academic resources available at the library. It is a great model to have three large academic support programs such as these in one centralized location.”

Marguerite Newcomb, Associate Director of the Judith G. Gardner Center for Writing Excellence, agrees that the new space will greatly enhance service to students.

“We’ve grown tremendously in the past few years, and anyone who has visited our last locations knows how crowded they can be,” she says. “The new spaces in the JPL for both our Tutor Room and our Computer Lab are beautiful, as well as spacious. We believe this move is a continuation of the dream of the Writing Center’s founder and namesake, Judith G. Gardner.”

Integrating student academic support services into a university’s library is an increasingly common phenomenon nationwide, says Krisellen Maloney, Dean of Libraries. “It just makes sense for students,” she says. “We are trying to find new and creative ways to ensure students graduate from UTSA. I believe one of the keys to engagement is to make all our academic support services as accessible and inviting as we can. With these additional programs now integrated into JPL, students can get the help they need without traveling all over campus.”

Library resources once found in the new Writing Center/SI/Tutoring space have been relocated to other areas of the library. A new room dedicated to periodicals, microforms and newspapers has opened on JPL’s fourth floor.

Two additional components of the JPL renovation project are due to be complete later this semester. An expansion of the Information Commons—with the addition of 75 computer terminals—is scheduled to open in late October, and a new 80-seat quiet study room will open mid-November.

More information on the John Peace Library renovation project can be found on the Renovation News blog.

Alumni Come Back and Give Back at Rowdy Wing Fling

This Annual free event welcomes the entire UTSA community and endeavors to educate and promote awareness of the risks and responsibilities of alcohol use. Manny and his Nationwide Regional Director, Luis, chose to sponsor the exhibit booth in an effort to provide UTSA Roadrunners with decision making tools so they will make the best decisions around alcohol. Both Manny and Daniel are examples of alumni that put their words into action on behalf of our UTSA students.

Additionally, he supported Leader Summit held September 18, 2010 at UTSA by presenting two sessions as noted below. Manny and Nationwide also contributed financially to both the Rowdy Wing Fling and Leader Summit events.
