Business Tips

During times when Work Study employees in your departments do not work a full pay period (e.g. December 16-31, May 16-31, etc.) but they still have an active appointment, please either submit a time card reflecting zero hours worked or email Amanda Marín to let her know that the Work Study employee did not work during that pay period. This is something the Work Study Compliance area has recently started to request. It helps UTSA remain compliant with federal and state Work Study regulations and ensures Work Study staff are being paid for each pay period and do not exceed 30 days before being paid for work performed. Should you have questions about this process, please contact Amanda.

Wellness Tips

How many of you know someone with Type 2 Diabetes? This disease is highly prevalent in San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley. The good news is that with healthy lifestyle changes, we can all make a big difference in helping to prevent and treat this disease.

2nd question: How many of you have heard of the drug Metformin (also known as Glucophage)? This is a common medication used for those with diabetes.

Now the BIG question: How many of you know that studies have shown that the combination of a low fat diet and exercising moderately (at least 150 minutes per week) has a GREATER effect on reducing the risk of Type-2 diabetes than the drug Metformin. Plus, you don’t suffer any of the negative consequences of the medication.

What does this mean? If you or someone you know is at risk of developing Type-2 diabetes, know that you are in control of whether you get this disease. Try some dietary changes and exercise first. You will be amazed at the difference!
