Third Annual Student Affairs Conference

The third annual Student Affairs Conference is history but based on the comments and evaluations, it was a very successful event. The Staff Development Team worked hard to collaborate with the UTSA community and create an experience where all attendees would benefit. With almost twenty breakout sessions to choose from there was something for everyone from the newest staff member to the seasoned professional. With many programs designed around our theme of “Building Bridges”, topics ranged from creative leadership, time management, mapping your career and generations in the workplace to working with disruptive people, personality styles, developing proposals and Fancy Nancy writing. The Facilities Planning and Development Department even provided an overview of the Campus Master Plan so staff members could visualize the physical changes planned for UTSA.

Over the lunch period, Dr. Gage Paine provided an inspiring, metaphorical presentation on the bridges we create each and every day and how important they are to our success.

This year, for the very first time, we added several new elements to the conference. We were able to invite a keynote speaker, Dr. Stan Carpenter, Dean of the College of Education at Texas State University, San Marcos to provide insight into the important role that Student Affairs staff plays in the education of our students. The opportunity to provide lunch for all attendees and our strategic efforts to “mix everyone up” allowed attendees to connect and communicate with new people throughout the division.

And don’t forget the door prizes. We received a nice variety of items from both the UTSA and San Antonio community and there were many happy winners throughout the day. And, last but not least, a Silent Auction to benefit the Transformation Fund was set up in the Ballroom. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and our staff, at the end of the day our division staff were able to contribute over $1300.00 to the fund. Happy owners walked away with several Roadrunner sculptures, signed footballs, campus recreation memberships and much more. Everyone left the conference with a feeling they had of having learned something new and that their time had been well-spent.

Congratulations on a great job!

CORPUS CHRISTI — The UTSA women's golf team won its first-ever Southland Conference Championship on Wednesday at Corpus Christi Country Club.

The Roadrunners, who defeated Lamar by seven strokes, shot a final-round 297 and not only captured their first title in just their sixth year of competition, but they also picked up the athletics department's record fifth championship of 2010-11 (men's basketball, soccer, men's indoor track & field, volleyball are the others). UTSA finished the three-day event with a final scorecard of 900 (306-297-297).

"This was the result of a lot of hard work and it was a team effort all three days," third-year head coach Carrie Parnaby said. "These ladies played their hearts out and I'm so proud of each of them. They completely deserve it and it's a great day for UTSA Golf....

The Office of Student Financial Aid and Enrollment Services is holding a Facebook Contest during the month of April, Financial Literacy Month. Students will be given the chance to respond to questions on our Facebook page for the chance to win some great UTSA prizes! This is our second contest of this type. The first contest was held during Financial Aid Awareness month in February and was a great success resulting in an increase of over 10,000 views of our page and 67 followers! These type of contests not only help our students become more knowledgeable on financial issues in their life, but helps to familiarize them with the resources offered by offices here at the University. Encourage students to “like” us to ensure they receive important information and updates as well as win prizes.

Dezranique Stansberry Named Roadrunner of the Month

Health and Wellness Expo

(April 7, 2011) – The UTSA Student Leadership Center announces Dezranique Stansberry as Roadrunner of the Month for March 2011. Dez was nominated by Jennette Hughes who works with her in Financial Services.

Dez is from Sugarland, TX where she graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School. She is currently a junior studying biology. With her degree, Dez would love to become a pharmacist and be able to give back to her hometown and UTSA.

As an orientation leader and a resident advisor, Dez has been an excellent example of leadership at UTSA. As a resident advisor she helps her residents through weekly study groups and talks to them about how they can become involved and engaged on campus. According to Jennette Hughes, “Dezranique should become Roadrunner of the Month because of her self-driven determination and achieved excellence”. Jeanette shared in her nomination how Dez has a spirit to serve others and is always willing to go above and beyond expectations.

Dez was recently awarded Volunteer of the Year at the University Life Awards, achieved Who’s Who and is consistently on the Dean’s List for excelling in academics. She is actively involved on campus, including taking the role of historian in her honor’s fraternity. Dez has a passion for UTSA and often attends conferences, luncheons, and meetings as a representative of the university and as an active student leader.
