What is Your True Colors Spectrum?

With well over 300 student staff trained in True Colors, Campus Recreation student employees are often asked “What is your True Colors spectrum?” After a pause, many of them were able to recite their spectrum. The challenge came when they were asked about the color spectrum of their student colleagues who worked similar shifts. To address this issue, Campus Recreation provided student employees with orange, blue, green, and yellow (for gold) dot-stickers for their name badges.

We remind our student employees that True Colors is a model for understanding yourself and the different motivations, actions, and communication styles of their peers, co-workers and family members. By understanding your color spectrum and the attributes associated with each color, you have a better opportunity to know how to best approach various situations. Now that all professional staff members and student employees have their most and least dominant colored dots on their name badges, we have a readily available indicator of what those colors are and how to begin communicating about diverse situations that arise daily in our department. This information can be critical to what you initially say and do in most situations. True Colors research suggests that individuals generally operate in the mode of their most dominate color during normal situations. In contrast, the research also implies that individuals operate in their least dominate color in stressful situations.

By knowing your spectrum and understanding the associated attributes of each color, you are able to put yourself in the shoes of others and use reframing to improve communication. This approach paves the way for more effective communication on a daily basis at work or at home.

As a department, we have found that the two dot indicator is a quick and easy way to incorporate True Colors in all that we do on a daily basis!

Thank you.
