University Career Center hosted members of the National Career Development Association

During a visit from members of the National Career Development Association last month the University Career Center highlighted many of the program initiatives which have been undertaken over the past years. In addition to our guests from Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, the Arab Emirates, Trinidad and Peru, the University Career Center also hosted career center directors and staff from other universities around the country. Visitors were able to learn about our many collaborations and specialized programs as well as connect with our staff or participate in an optional tour of the university or the newly opened Visualization Lab. Comments such as “This was truly the best program I have attended” and “Lots of great information to take back with me” were consistently mentioned in the evaluations received from the participants. We were excited to receive such an overwhelmingly positive response and to be able to share new ideas and creative ways to reach students!

The agenda details what the attendees participated in and the Overview is the handout that each of them received. We also had 4 staff members who presented at the NCDA conference the following two days. Shirley Rowe presented two Tech Café sessions: Are You LinkedIn? and Moving Beyond PowerPoint. Mary Buzzetta, Stefanie Cisneros and Mike Zucker presented on “CELEBRATING DIVERSITY: ACHIEVING SOCIAL JUSTICE”.

Here are some comments from the evaluations:

“This was truly the best program I have attended”

“Lots of great information to take back with me”

"Many new ideas! UTSA has a great CS staff. It was great!"

"It was so well-organized, informative and engaging! Everyone was accessible for personal conversations."

"Excellent workshop that gives other professionals a first-hand view of a career services center."

"However my most enjoyable time was time spent at UTSA- the environment was infectious!"

"A rich experience for all." (this was from the President-elect of the organization)

KENS 5 announced Monday morning its TV partnership with the University of Texas at San Antonio.

As the official partner, KENS 5 will serve UTSA fans with complete coverage, contests and giveaways. The partnership coincides with the university's inaugural football season.

"We are very pleased and very happy to be a part of UTSA's inaugural football season," said Bob McGann, KENS 5 president and general manager. "We look forward spreading support and excitement for all of Roadrunners athletics."

Head football coach Larry Coker said the partnership will help provide much needed publicity to his new team.

"Let’s face it, we’re all living on a vision right now," he said. "We have recruits on a vision, coaches on a vision. But as people see this, the vision will become a reality”

UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey also stressed the importance of publicity.

“September 3rd is going to be a day in history," she said. "And we’re trying to get the word out and we want to pack the dome on that first day.”

“It’s time to ramp it up and get the message out and get tickets sold," Coker said. "And to have KENS 5 in our corner is going to help us a lot.”

Artificial turf to be installed on recreational fields on UTSA Main Campus

By Victoria O'Connor Communications and Customer Relations Representative, Office of Facilities

(June 27, 2011)--Installation began in May of synthetic grass turf at the recreational fields on the west side of the UTSA Main Campus. Covered by real grass since 2005, the new turf will save water and maintenance costs. The project coordinated by the Office of Facilities is expected to be complete by the end of summer.

The 10-acre Recreational Field Complex is west of the running track and south of the men's baseball field. The turf project will include construction of a 10-foot walking and jogging track surrounding the fields.

The eco-friendly turf offers many benefits over natural grass in San Antonio's persistent dry weather. With no need for maintenance such as fertilizing, seeding, mowing and watering, the turf will benefit UTSA and the environment through an estimated savings of approximately 4.7 million gallons of water per year. UTSA also will receive a San Antonio Water System rebate because of water conservation.

The additional benefits of the low-maintenance, all-weather surface of artificial turf are predictable field conditions, year-round use and extended playing time, since the fields do not have to recover from wear or inclement weather. The crumb-rubber infill of the turf is made from recycled tires and resembles natural grass in shape and texture.

The Recreational Field Complex will continue to house intramural sports, club sports and open recreation programs, which currently provide activities for UTSA students to participate in recreational sports such as flag football, outdoor soccer, lacrosse, softball, rugby and ultimate Frisbee.

>> The field hours of operation for the fall and spring semesters will be 1-11:45 p.m., Sunday-Thursday; 1-8 p.m., Friday; and 1-4 p.m., Saturday. For more information, visit the UTSA Campus Recreation website.

>> For construction information and a map of the recreation field site, visit the UTSA Facilities website or contact Facilities Work Control at 210-458-4262.
