UTSA community can help foster youths with luggage drive through Oct. 21

UTSA Air Force ROTC Detachment 842

(Oct. 18, 2011) -- The UTSA Bank of America Child and Adolescent Policy Research Institute (CAPRI) ACCESS Center is hosting a luggage drive to benefit San Antonio foster youths. Luggage can be donated through Oct. 21.

With more than 4,000 youths in the Bexar County foster-care system, the young people often are moved from one home to another carrying their belongings in trash bags. Dining Etiquette Dinner

Dance with the dead Dance with the dead

Table manners and dining etiquette play an important part of making a favorable impression and are often essential for professional success. Our students often do not understand the basics of dining out, let alone fine dining. The University Career Center will host a Dining Etiquette Dinner on Wednesday, October 26th in the Denman Room (UC 2.01.28) to provide an opportunity for our students to learn the art of fine dining and to understand and appreciate the protocol of business etiquette. To assist as table hosts for the event, we have invited employers to participate in this professional and educational function for students.

The event will start off with a Networking Reception from 5:30 – 6:00 pm and continue on to the Dinner & Program 6:00 – 8:00 pm. There is a $15 registration fee per person and students can register online at RowdyJobs. Business professional dress is required for the event and will be enforced at the door. For questions about the event, please contact the University Career Center at 210.458.4589 or stop by the office at UC 2.02.04.

Xavier Johnson Named Roadrunner of the Month

Dr. Ricardo Romo- UTSA President

The UTSA Student Leadership Center announces Xavier Johnson as Roadrunner of the Month for September 2011. Xavier was nominated by John Montoya, Assistant Director of Student Activities and SGA.

Xavier is from Austin, Texas where he graduated from Lake Travis High School. He is currently a junior studying Sociology at UTSA. With his degree, Xavier would love to become an entertainment lawyer and represent artists, musicians, actors, and actresses.

As the President of the Student Government Association, Xavier has been an excellent example of leadership at UTSA. At the Fall Convocation Xavier addressed the freshman class by talking to them about community, leadership, scholarship and integrity. According to John Montoya, “Xavier exemplifies leadership on campus by being a leader who recognizes that his job is to serve his constituents”. While at Roadrunner Camp he encouraged the incoming freshman to get involved and provide him with feedback in order to enhance their UTSA experience.

When asked what leadership meant to him, Xavier stated, “Leadership means helping others selflessly and wholeheartedly. Leadership means taking initiative and motivating others to do so as well”.

The Roadrunner of the Month award is sponsored by the Student Leadership Center to recognize outstanding UTSA student leadership contributions.

Nominees must meet these criteria to be considered for the award:
• Must be a full-time UTSA undergraduate or graduate student
• Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher at the time of nomination
• Must have demonstrated excellence in leadership above and beyond typical expectations
• Nominations should be for actions that positively impact the UTSA community

R.O.W.D.Y.S. Camp 2011 Thanks You

On behalf of the entire Orientation and Family Programs’ office, we would like to extend a BIG thank you to everyone that helped make R.O.W.D.Y.S. Camp 2011 possible (Oct 14-16)! Because of YOU, 36 roadrunners had the opportunity to attend camp and evaluate their current transition strategy to UTSA through StrengthsQuest lead sessions. As a result of the camp experience participants identified their personal barriers to academic and social success, increased their awareness of successful strategies to overcome barriers and developed an action plan for their future academic and social success at UTSA. It’s certain that all our students left with a new network of friends and UTSA mentors. Once again, thank you!

Student Leadership Center Hosts Women in Leadership Storytelling Series Luncheon

Dance with the dead
Dance with the dead

The Storytelling Series Luncheon is an event hosted by the Student Leadership Center each semester. The purpose of the luncheon is to bring together students, faculty and staff in a casual atmosphere where they can connect and share their leadership stories. Those that attend are given the opportunity to network through sharing leadership ideas, experiences and challenges. This semester the Student Leadership Center held a special version of the luncheon for women. This suggestion was brought to the Student Leadership Center by students that attended LeaderShape® in May 2011 and were greatly impacted by one of the guest speakers, Jelynne Burley.

The Women in Leadership Storytelling Series Luncheon was held on October 4, 2011 in the Bexar Room in the UC3. The luncheon provided an opportunity to share leadership stories and take knowledge back to each individual’s community. Those that attended discussed topics such as double standards for men and women in leadership, leadership skills possessed by women, why women don’t sit at the table, and how women can support each other in leadership.

UTSA student group The Movement and Nike partner for tennis shoe drive

UTSA Air Force ROTC Detachment 842

By Travis Jourdan
Member, The Movement

(Oct. 6, 2011) -- The Movement, a UTSA student organization, has partnered with Nike to promote sustainability and recycling of old tennis shoes. Movement member Michael Adames created the plan and worked diligently to secure the partnership with Nike.

The Movement and Nike hope to collect 500 used, unwanted athletic shoes to support a Nike recycling program. The shoes will be taken apart and re-used to create new surfaces for sport courts around the nation. Adames also worked with the UTSA Recreation Center to set up shoe collection bins at the facility.

Campus Rec and The Movement also will collect shoes at the fourth annual Rowdy Rec 5K Run on Oct. 23. UTSA community members are encouraged to register for the race and bring their old athletic shoes to recycle. The Movement will collect the shoes until late November.

For more information and to get involved in this and other initiatives, visit The Movement website or email TheMVMNT@hotmail.com.
