Five Minutes to Four C’s

In our fast paced work environment, it is not always easy to remain focused on excellence. The feelings of “get it done” and “don’t delay” drown out the charge of excellence and student success. With that in mind, here are some simple (and quick) ways to bring the Four C’s to life in your work.

Communicate - How long has it been since you expanded your circle of influence? We can only be the “last to serve” if we know what is happening at our university. Take five minutes and get information from an area completely different from your own – inside or outside your department. Begin the conversation with “tell me a little more about what’s going on – how can I help you?”

Connect – Is your role in Student Affairs one that primarily works alone or with others? Either type of position requires regular “connections.” Follow Student Affairs on Facebook at
https://www.facebook.com/UTSAStudentAffairs or on Twitter at
https://twitter.com/UTSAStudents - Boom! You are connected to our community.

Collaborate – Do your collaborations with staff and students remove obstacles to student success? If department A and department B shared our resources and information – Issue C for a student is mitigated. It’s like math. What would you add AND subtract? Take five minutes to write a collaboration formula. For example: Student Activities + Student Conduct + Housing and Residence Life + Counseling + Health Education + Campus Activities Board + Police = Party on the Paseo.

Create – Sometimes it feels as though our areas have been the same for ten years. What could possibly be created? Don’t just focus on the “what” of create – focus on the “how.” How can you streamline or evolve a process this summer? Write it down and post it on your wall or computer desktop. Each day you take a step in that direction - add a checkmark.

We would love to hear what you come up with. Please send us an email to let us know how these ideas worked for you.
