New Associate Director of Service Learning

The Student Center for Civic Engagement and Inclusion welcomes Brian Halderman, LMSW as the new Associate Director for Service Learning. Brian joins the Center after a short time with a local child welfare agency and several years of experience in higher education at St. Mary’s University both as staff and adjunct faculty. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton and Masters of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis.

“We are enthusiastic to have Brian join the team. He brings a wealth of experience and we look forward to him working with our faculty and enhancing service-learning initiatives for our students,” said Yvonne Peña, Assistant Dean of Students.

“I am excited to begin working with faculty and students engaged in service-learning," said Brian. "I hope to build on the good foundational work that has been accomplished and continue to foster partnerships with departments, faculty members and the broader San Antonio community to enhance our institutional efforts in service-learning.”

The Service Learning Initiative of the Center serves as a great resource to faculty who are engaged in, or to those interested in, teaching service learning courses.

Reviewers Needed for Student Who's Who Submissions

You are invited to join in on the selection process for the 2013-2014 recipients of the annual Who's Who -- we have almost 400 applications this year!

This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize all of UTSA's hard working students for their academic and co-curricular involvement achievements.

Each volunteer will use a provided scoring matrix and our electronic process to review and score approximately 30 applications. All applications will be reviewed and scored by Friday, February 21 by 5:00pm.

A total of 150 applications submitted by juniors, seniors, and graduate students will be selected for recognition.

In addition, for the tenth year we also will select 20 freshmen and 20 sophomores to be recognized as Who's Who at UTSA. These students will not be recognized by the national Who's Who; however UTSA will be recognizing them for their outstanding leadership endeavors. Hopefully, once those freshmen and sophomores become juniors and seniors they will be recognized at the national level!

The Who's Who Recognition Ceremony will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 6pm in the University Center Ballroom. All application reviewers will be invited to attend!

If you would like to help, please contact Charlin Jones, Who's Who Program Coordinator, by Monday, February 3, or call her at 210-458-6736.
