Student Engagement Survey

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a survey administered each year to freshmen and seniors at over 600 institutions in North America. In 2013, 356 first-year students and 925 senior students (1,281 total) at UTSA participated. The survey focuses on areas such as academic challenge, learning with peers, experiences with faculty, and campus environment. Additionally, students are asked about high-impact practices such a study abroad, service-learning, and internships.

In 2013, UTSA students rated their campus experience in the following ways:

  • 82% of first-year students and 83% of seniors rated their overall experience with UTSA as excellent or good.
  • 78% of first-year students and 80% of seniors would definitely or probably attend UTSA again.
  • 80% of seniors reported gains of “very much” or “quite a bit” for “Thinking critically and analytically.” The next four highest gains were reported for: Working effectively with others; Speaking clearly and effectively; Writing clearly and effectively; and Analyzing numerical and statistical information.

Freshmen and seniors have recently received an email regarding the 2014 survey. In the past, our return rates have been fairly low. We are hoping to raise these rates in order to gain more useful information about our students and their learning. Please encourage the students you work with to take a few moments to complete this survey. Thank you!

See you next month!
