March 2014, Issue 3

Spring has sprung. The bluebonnets have bloomed. Spring Break is behind us and it wasn’t quiet! The break was a busy time for many of our offices.

Undergraduate Admissions hosted 1,860 prospective students and guests during Spring Break tours and events. You can see pictures on their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Some offices joined in and took group selfies to welcome our prospective and admitted Roadrunners. You can add your office’s picture by using #UTSAtour.

The Student Center for Community Engagement and Inclusion hosted three Alternative Spring Break trips to St. Louis, Biloxi and right here in San Antonio. These Roadrunners chose community service for the break. I applaud the staff advisors and students for their dedication. Read more about these events in the Spotlight section.

I announced plans for the organizational realignment of the student services departments at the last Student Affairs Council meeting. Here are the key changes:

  • Counseling Services, Student Disability Services and Student Health Services will collaborate under the leadership of Beth Wichman as Executive Director
  • Campus Recreation will join Student Life under Kevin Price
  • University Career Center and the Child Development Center will join the departments led by Lisa Blazer.

This organizational streamlining of programs and services will position departments to fully contribute to the success of our strategic initiatives.

I had the privilege of welcoming participants to the Student Affairs Conference on March 20th. The sessions ranged in topics from Tier One Recruitment to non-verbal communication and everything in between. New to the conference this year was a motivational speaker to begin and end the day, an expanded networking area and participants from outside the division and university. It is events like these that help us continually improve our programs and services. I think it is important to take the time to better ourselves through professional development – and to get the opportunity to think about work differently.

It is not too late to register for the conference on April 4th. Click here for registration information. I look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes,

Sam
