UTSA architecture students present Navarro Academy playground design projects

(Aug. 17, 2005)--UTSA School of Architecture students presented playground designs Aug. 10 for the San Antonio Independent School District/UTSA Early Childhood Development Center at the Navarro Academy, one of San Antonio's first schools.
Sponsored by the center, the competition involved 19 students who were part of the Design Studio II class taught by Marc Giaccardo, UTSA associate professor of architecture.

RSS FeedsFirst prize in the competition went to Lisa Taylor for her project, "Path in the Sky." Taylor won $500 for her design. Lan Li finished second and earned a $400 award, followed by Audrey McBee ($300), Marielle Luna ($200) and Arthur Mendoza ($100). Taylor will work with a committee on construction of the playground.
The child development center, funded by a Department of Housing and Urban Development grant, is the result of a proposal written by Harriett Romo, UTSA associate professor of sociology. The proposal earned accolades from HUD as the top proposal in the nation. The $584,972 HUD grant, coupled with $480,000 in bond money from SAISD, funded construction, computers, curricula development and small-business seminars for the center on San Antonio's West Side.
