UTSA Spotlight: UTSA environmental scientist honored for agronomy research

(Aug. 2, 2005)--Dibyendu (Dibs) Sarkar, UTSA associate professor of environmental geochemistry, was awarded the 2005 Early Career Award in Research by the Southern branch of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA).

ASA, the largest agronomic society in the world, has more than 21,000 members representing agronomy, crop science and soil science divisions.
Sarkar was recognized for his outstanding contributions and accomplishments in agronomic research, a field dealing with field-crop production and soil management in agriculture. He developed the first program in the UT System dedicated to training students in environmental agronomic research.
In 2004, Sarkar received the Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Association of Agricultural Scientists of Indian Origin.
As director of the Environmental Geochemistry Laboratory over the last five years, Sarkar has trained 19 graduate students and post-doctoral associates, published 75 articles and generated more than $1.5 million in research grants.
