(Aug. 31, 2005)--UTSA and the Joan Grona Gallery present the photography exhibit, "Vistas Mexicanas," through Sept. 30 at the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, Suite 112, Alamo and Probandt streets.

UTSA President Ricardo Romo took the photographs in the exhibit during a recent trip to Guanajuato, San Miguel Allende and Dolores, Mexico. Romo visited Mexico to discuss exchange and study abroad programs with representatives from several universities and municipalities.

Prints of the photos on exhibit are for sale with proceeds benefiting the Fox Tech Scholarship Fund. Romo is a graduate of Louis W. Fox Technical High School, known as Fox Tech. As of today, print sales have reached $3,200. For more information, contact exhibit curator Arturo Almeida at (210) 458-4983.

According to Arturo Almeida, exhibit curator and UTSA art specialist, Romo's photos capture colorful views of life in northern Mexico. "In these photographs, Dr. Romo looks closely at the details of everyday items such as buildings, dishes and textiles," said Almeida. "His unique view turns the common items into a new artistic form."

"Vistas Mexicanas" coincides with the tradition of Fotoseptiembre, an annual photography festival conducted each September in San Antonio, across Texas and in other U.S. cities.

Joan Grona Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday and noon-4 p.m., Sunday, or by appointment.

As part of First Friday, Joan Grona Gallery hours Sept. 2 are 4-9 p.m. First Friday is a monthly event in the San Antonio Southtown area for which art galleries in the district remain open late.
