Volunteers needed to tutor hurricane evacuees

(Sept. 27, 2005)--The UTSA Office of K-16 Initiatives, Honors College Academy for Teacher Excellence (ATE) and the College of Education and Human Development are searching for caring college students with strong interpersonal skills to volunteer as tutors for children displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Volunteers are needed for a minimum of one-hour time slots 4-7 p.m., Monday; 4-6 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday at Kelly Air Force Base Building 171. Tutoring begins Monday, Oct. 3.
A volunteer orientation session is 3-4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept 28 in Durango Building Room 2.206 at the UTSA Downtown Campus.
"I want to thank all of you who have responded to the call to help as tutors for children displaced by Hurricane Katrina," said Lorena Claeys, ATE director. "For others who have not yet responded, please consider volunteering if you are interested in helping these students to excel."
