UTSA hosts GLBT Pride Month through Oct. 21

(Oct. 4, 2005)--The UTSA Alpha Lambda Tau Fraternity, Lambda Alliance, Allies Program, University Center and Office of Student Activities host a series of events in October celebrating Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Pride Month.

The events at the 1604 and Downtown campuses are open to the public, and most are free.

Activities range from a free Glamour Pix photo shoot to film festivals, including a lecture from former student affairs professional and college speaker Jimmy Moore. Moore will speak at both campuses in an interactive performance lecture, "Heterophobia."

Another key event is the GLBT Film Festival, Silent Auction and Reception. Four movies will be shown, two at the 1604 Campus and two at the Downtown Campus. All are gay- or lesbian-themed, including films such as "Bear Cub" and "Harry and Max."

Admission to the film festival is $5 for students with UTSACard. General admission is $12, $20 for advance tickets to the film showings at both campuses. Tickets can be purchased from members of Alpha Lambda Tau. Proceeds benefit Alpha Lambda Tau and the Diversity Center.

The silent auction and the reception are free. Some of the prizes in the auction are cosmetic kits, a gift box and gift certificates to various restaurants including Mad Hatter's Tea House.

On National Coming Out Day, Oct. 11, there will be an information fair with booths sponsored by organizations including Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians And Gays (PFLAG), the Diversity Center and Hope Action Care.

National Coming Out Day (NCOD) began Oct. 11, 1987, when half a million people participated in the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Coming Out Project, which organizes NCOD, is an ongoing campaign to empower gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and allied Americans to live openly and honestly about their lives. The theme of NCOD 2005 is "Talk About It."

Students, faculty and staff, gay or straight, who are interested in joining the social support organization, GLBT Allies, can register to attend the training session from 2 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18. For more information and the location of the Allies Training session, e-mail David Kessler.
