(Jan. 26, 2006)--The running shoes of participants in the UTSA Alumni Association Diploma Dash 5K Run and Fitness Walk will hit the pavement at 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Convocation Center on the 1604 Campus.

Celebrating its 22nd year, the UTSA 5K run and fitness walk raises money for student scholarships and other alumni programs and services.

New San Antonio City Manager Sheryl Sculley, a marathon runner, will be a special guest at the race and will fire the starting gun. An official UTSA 2006 Homecoming Week event, the race has the prestige of serving as San Antonio's City Championship Race with a USATF-certified course. USA Track and Field is the national governing body for track and field, long-distance running and race walking in the United States.

"We are expecting a record number of participants this year," said Tom Vaello, UTSA '80, Diploma Dash 2006 chair. "After all, it's an event for both the serious competitor and the weekend jogger or walker." Additionally, Vaello is the Alumni Association board director and owner of Right Image Printing.

Early registration through Feb. 8 is $20, or at 8 a.m. on race day for $30. Registration for UTSA students with UTSACard is $10 through Feb. 8 at the Office of Alumni Programs in the University Center, 1604 Campus.

The presenting sponsor again this year is The Argonaut Group Inc., a San Antonio-based national specialty underwriter, and a Pacesetter sponsor is The Capital Group Companies. Other sponsors are Humana, Valero Energy Corp., H-E-B, Liberty Mutual Group, ING Financial Services, Marmon Mok, Right Images Printing, Roger Soler's Sports, Security Service Federal Credit Union, Stoneybrooke.net Vacation Home and Iniguez Athletic Advertising and Promotion

Food and beverage providers for Diploma Dash include Alamo Café, Great Harvest Bread, H-E-B, Hershey, Oak Farms Dairy, Pepsi, Starbucks and Whole Foods Market.

A variety of activities is planned for runners and their families, including a wellness area for health screening and interactive assessments, children's activities and appearances by the UTSA cheerleaders and Rowdy Roadrunner, the UTSA mascot.

Each runner receives a long-sleeved t-shirt. Medals will be awarded in 13 age categories in addition to Clydesdale and Filly divisions. Plaques and cash awards are the top prizes for men and women.

The Corporate Team Challenge and the ROTC Challenge also are popular aspects of the race. A new category, Corporate Partner, recognizes companies that want to contribute without an official race team.

Register online at the Diploma Dash 5K Run and Fitness Walk Web site or call (210) 458-4133 to request a brochure and entry form. Entry forms also are available at area running stores and local sponsors.
