'Gradiant' exhibit Jan. 13 features art by UTSA students

By Tim Brownlee
Assistant Director of Public Affairs

(Jan. 12, 2006)--UTSA President Ricardo Romo and Dr. Harriett Romo will host an opening reception for the exhibit, "Gradiant," from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 13 at the Radius Cafe, 106 Auditorium Circle, in downtown San Antonio. The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through February.

The exhibition features the work of UTSA graduate students Stacy Berlfein, Roberta Buckles, Derrick Durham, Melody Fernandez, Brian Jobe, Mimi Kato, Adrien Ryder, Julie Shipp and Russell Stephenson.

Joan Grona, local gallery owner, and Arturo Almeida, UTSA art specialist, with the support of Kent Rush, chair of the UTSA Department of Art and Art History, will judge the work. One artist will be selected to have a one-person show at the Joan Grona Gallery in the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center.

"This is a new annual event that Dr. Romo is very excited to sponsor," said Almeida. "He contacted Joan Grona to help establish the event because he feels it is very important for UTSA to work closely with the local art community."

According to Grona, "It is a great opportunity to share the art of UTSA students with the community. We're always so thrilled when we can encourage people to experience the art and music of our city, and I'm honored to be a part of it. I'm excited that the students can experience this part of the city and the Radius facility. I want to thank Arturo for helping me connect with Dr. Romo to plan the project, and also the owner of the Radius, Paul Carter, who is a big supporter of San Antonio art and artists. Whenever we can do things like this, the better off we all are."
