HR offers employee safety, security classes

By Tim Brownlee
Assistant Director of Public Affairs

(Feb. 28, 2006)--Since the disappearance of student Naomi Fuentes nine days ago, the issue of safety has become a concern to some members of the UTSA community.

As a reminder, the UTSA Office of Training and Development, part of the Office of Human Resources, conducts staff safety and security classes each semester to help inform and protect the UTSA community.

UTSA police officer Geoffrey Merritt will teach a staff safety and security class on April 7 at the Downtown Campus, May 5 at the 1604 Campus and May 12 at the Institute of Texan Cultures, as part of this semester's training and development offerings.

"UTSA's growth heightens the need for everyone to be aware of safety concerns in our offices and across the campuses," said Merritt. "In the class, you will learn how the UTSA Police Department supports safety on campus, and how you and your office can practice safety measures and apply techniques to reduce crime and safety risks. Awareness and prevention are the keys to personal safety."

According to Merritt, 80 percent of thefts on campus result from unattended items left in plain view. The class will provide tips on simple techniques to save lives and property, including discussion of safety measures in place at the UTSA campuses.

The class, SA464 Staff Safety and Security on Campus, will be offered 8:30-10:30 a.m., Friday, April 7 in Buena Vista Street Building Room 4.304A at the Downtown Campus, 8:30-10:30 a.m., Friday, May 5 in University Heights Building Room 1.106, near the 1604 Campus off Hausman Road, and 8-10 a.m., Friday, May 12 at the Institute of Texan Cultures. The ITC class location is to be announced.
