(June 7, 2006)--The University of Texas at San Antonio ranks No. 3 in the nation in the number of undergraduate degrees awarded to Hispanic students and No. 11 nationally in the number of master's degrees awarded to Hispanics according to the May 2006 edition of The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine.

The magazine surveyed the 2004-2005 academic year graduation rates of the Top 100 predominantly Hispanic-serving colleges and universities in the United States and Puerto Rico.

UTSA earned the No. 3 national ranking for awarding undergraduate degrees with 1,514 Hispanic students of the total 3,258 students earning bachelor's degrees, representing 46 percent of the graduating class.

UTSA ranked No. 11 nationally for awarding master's degrees with 304 Hispanic students of the total 855 receiving degrees, representing 36 percent of the class.

"As UTSA continues its drive toward becoming a premier research university, we remain focused on our mission to provide access to excellence," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. "These findings, once again, demonstrate UTSA's commitment to better serving our students traditionally underrepresented in higher education."

Each year, The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine reports on Hispanic student participation across all major fields of study. For the ninth time in 10 years, UTSA ranked first in the biological sciences with 144 undergraduate degrees awarded to Hispanics.

Two UTSA academic programs ranked higher than the previous year. The architecture program in the UTSA College of Architecture improved from fourth to second place, awarding 33 undergraduate degrees. The mathematics program in the UTSA College of Sciences improved from eighth to seventh place, awarding 15 undergraduate degrees to Hispanics.

Overall, the University of Texas System dominated the first tier of the Top 100 institutions with UT Pan American, UT El Paso, UT San Antonio, and UT Austin placing among the Top 10.
