UTSA ROTC commander retires after record recruitment

(July 17, 2006)--Col. James Solinski, commander of UTSA's Air Force ROTC Detachment 842, retired July 14 after completing three years of service to the university. His successor is Col. Lisa Firmin.

"We thank Col. Solinski for his service to UTSA and our country and congratulate him on the growth of the UTSA detachment," said Albert Carrisalez, UTSA assistant to the president and director of external affairs.

During his command at UTSA, Solinski helped grow the detachment to more than 200 cadets to become the second largest Air Force ROTC program in the Southwest Region, spanning the area from California to Louisiana.

Each semester, Detachment 842 commissions six to 12 new Air Force officers, and is credited with having one of the highest average GPAs in the region.

In 2005, the U.S. Air Force invested $600,000 in scholarships for UTSA Air Force ROTC cadets. Approximately 80 percent of the UTSA cadets are on scholarship with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
