(Oct. 6, 2006)--The UTSA Graduate Political Science Association will host a Texas Gubernatorial Debate party from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 6 in Main Building Room 0.106 at the 1604 Campus. As four candidates discuss the issues, the UTSA community is invited to observe the televised debate on monitors at the 1604 Campus.

The event, which will air live at 7 p.m. on local CBS affiliate KENS TV and KTSA Radio (AM 550), will be the only debate between the candidates before the Tuesday, Nov. 7 election.

The candidates are Republican incumbent Rick Perry, Democrat Chris Bell and independent candidates Kinky Friedman and Carol Keeton Strayhorn. Libertarian candidate James Werner was not invited to participate.

Topics will include education, immigration, ethics, energy, toll roads, property taxes and revision of the state business tax.

According to the Dallas Morning News, an event co-sponsor, the debate will last an hour with no opening statements from the candidates. Four journalists in succession will ask one question of one candidate, followed by each candidate asking one question of one other candidate. After several additional rounds of questions in various formats, the debate will close with a one-minute statement from each candidate.
